What are the signs that Brake Booster is gone. I think may have gone but I am not sure what the symptoms are of failing Brake Booster.

Anyone had any experience with this and approx cost to fix?

    Cheers

Why don't you list what you are experiencing. Will be easier for people to diagnose.

The master cylinders can need a rebuild on these cars, they are getting on a bit

Engine stalls when you put your foot on the brake when idleling, brake fluid leaking out, put your foot onto the brake with the engine not going several times the peddle movement should decrease each time and get hard.

    Ditto... also!

While sitting at the lights with your foot on the brake you'll notice it may slowly aink to the floor!

Leaking brake fluid is a Master Cylinder issue. Not sure on the booster fault. To rule it out, disconnect it and plug the hose from the plenum and test. If the fault is still there its somewhere else.

Ha ha, someone was bound to do it.
I was thinking along the same lines when I read the post topic.

My car has been getting very little use in recent times and has been sitting, vegetating in my garage(except for a trip last week, to the local garage for fuel).
Yesterday I had reason to move it out of the garage so I could get the mower out(because she who must be obeyed, had issued a decree).

When I moved it out I discovered a beautiful 400mm pond of Brake/Clutch fluid(located directly below the Brake M/Cyl). I still had fully functioning brakes.
Today I am $499 poorer(but I do have a new Master Cylinder with fluid inside it). :)
I tell of this little drama because there was no visible sign of a leak prior to finding the puddle of fluid.

    YOU DON'T ALWAYS GET A WARNING!:eek::eek:

Yeah sounds like I have booster problem

Master cylinder was rebuilt a couple of years ago. I am not loosing any brake fluid but was driving the other day and suddenly brake pedal went to the floor
Well not quite to the floor as brakes still worked, but felt like no pedal pressure.

If I sit in idle and press brake hard as possible car revs drop but car does not actually stall.

If it is brake booster, do you get new or get reconditioned or by from Cos in the US?

Any idea what they are worth?
    Cheers

Could also be one circuit is not sealing against the cup in the M/Cyl.
I had this happen with the yellow Z after a M /Cyl rebuild.

I had loss of braking (as only front brakes were working) and much lower pedal height.

Thats not a booster problem, a failed brake booster would make the pedal harder to push.

The only reasons for the pedal to go to the floor is if your not building up pressure in the MC, could be leaking past the plunger seal within the MC, this won't necessarily leak outside the MC, but you'll loose your pedal.

If you have a leak in the diaphram the cars idle will be affected, stalls most of the time when brake peddle is pushed.

I had both probs the vacuum line to the plenum gets very brittle with age and a small crack can let it leak so not work so well.
plus my master cylinder leaked but inside down the carpet side very hard to detect but got it sleeved in NSW by someone in Lismore only $150 to fix

I was talking about the pedal to the floor symptom.

    Funny,

Nobody mentions that when the brake booster is gone, your brakes don't work terribly well.

You press the brake as normal and the car does not slow down very much. You press abit more, and it does not make much difference. You STAND on the brake and the car SLOWLY comes to a halt. (unless you've hit something first)
