Whats this likely to be? water pump?
I was driving my car to work today and it started making some clinking noises, sounded like they were from gearbox and seemed to stop when i put the clutch in, and get louder with acceleration, then i stopped at a set of lights and the car stalled, started it again and it started second attempt but shot a whole heap of black smoke, but then no smoke or anything afterwards.
I drove it around the corner and stopped the car and had a look, half the engine bay was covered in orange like copper from water (last time i checked coolant at top of radiator looked quiet clean though), and radiator looked empty.
I poured a little (500mil or so) of water into the radiator to see if it was really empty or just only half full and after maybe a 5second delay it all came back up as steam very quickly.
Got the car towed home and filled it with water, started fine, and seems to have a fairly slow water leak (far from the spraying etc i expected after looking at engine bay) which is only there when engines running. The leak is coming from somewhere near the bottom of the engine, behind where i assume ac compressor etc is from pullies.

Seconded. Do a system pressure test - FOC at most good workshops.
