Does anyone have any experience with owning a Zed in Victoria, whilst being on P-plates?

    Here's the up-to-date Vicroads guideline:

From what I can gather, it isn't a strictly enforced law, however the point is, a 150AUD fine would soon begin to irritate.

So my question is, if you want to own a 300ZX (89-93)in victoria (SE suburbs), then what are the options, if any at all?

I'm not a hoon, I enjoy the challenge of staying 2-5K's under the speed limit for an entire journey. I strongly dislike morons who show no respect for human life or it's precarious nature.

I'm brand new here too :zlove:

    Thanks for the fast reply!

It might not be that easy, because your still driving a high-power vehicle as defined by the law as such.

I think that if you appeal a fine, then the car is taken for formal flywheel testing, but the on-the-spot fine is issued on the basis of the stock standard numbers.

It would be very basic to win every single appeal simply with the use of lead or other means to weigh the car down (or reduce kW output), however the process being repeated would become annoying.

The following is the acceptable reasoning for gaining an exemption to the law, and as you can see, you basically have to move out of home (don't wanna) in order to start a new household, or be a V8 supercar driver.

Just looked up Redbook for 300zx specs and the Na is listed at 168kw and 1490kg.
Based on this a P-plater in Vic can have a NA Z32 and even tweak the motor a tad.

    dont worry about it mate!

I live in Doncaster and Iam constantly driving my Twin Turbo Z on my L's! I've been pulled over a couple of times, because of the way my car looks, but I've never been in trouble. You just have to be polite to the cops and not speed or hoon around and you should be fine!

I drive a TT and im in VIC on my P's and it is not legal

no matter what name it is in etc. When I first bought the car VIC Roads informed me of these exact words 'If you can get insurance under your name, then the car is legal for you to drive' After buying the TT and driving around in it I eventually got pulled over and fined for driving it.

I called VIC Roads and explained this and even wrote a letter and their reply was 'no one here would ever say that'.

You can put a lambo in your name but that doesn't mean you can drive it.

Also if your from the SE suburbs you will probably get hassled pretty badly.

The fine is $105 and you're not meant to be allowed to drive it from that point onwards. I was told I couldn't but the officer said he 'won't watch what i do' so i drove. Another friend wasn't allowed to drive it, they waited for him. Also another friend got the fine on a cruise and the cops just let him go.

The book says it carries 3 demerit points but when I spoke to civic compliance they said it carries none. I am yet to find someone who has had this fine AND lost points. No one I know has lost points so either the act on VIC Roads site is outdated or wrong?

You can't drive a TT regardless of what you say the power output is. Same goes for a skyline, if you work it out they are legal by 1kw. Now the officers say in their books that they are 196kw or something which they clearly arn't. Another friend of mine got done for driving his 180sx and has all the documentation to say it is legal and hasn't heard from the police for months now. My guess and his lawyers guess is that they know they are shafting people and if he gets off there will be a lot of trouble with the people who have been in trouble for driving that car.

At the end of the day it's your decision. I take the risk and drive but that's my choice.

I applied for an exemption but was denied it with the following words 'the power to weight ratio for probationary is to important to have any leniency'.

Also you can get insured for driving the car from just cars but you won't be insured for anything if they find out you were driving.

Other than all that welcome to the forum

I got done IN doncaster. The thing is..

When you drive a car on your L's there is no restrictions at all. Doncaster is exactly where i got pulled over. I am around the area every night and the amount of cops on the roads there has doubled in the last few months.

I don't drive like a hoon or anything, I was polite but I still got done. There is nothing you can do about it man.. it's all just luck depending on being at the right place at the wrong time.

It will be interesting to see in a month, when i get my liecence wherther..

..I'll get stung too. I thought the same law was in place for both L's and P's? Anyway there has to be something we can do to avoid this! Just because a few idiots decide to do 160 in a 60 zone why should people who drive carefully get stung?

Believe me there is NOTHING which can be done unless you have

the powers to change the law. You will get picked on because your a P-Plater.

There is no law restricting Learner drivers from driving any type of car. P's yes..

It was about 2pm when I got pulled over that time. I was in a pack of about 30 other cars and he weaved through them all and came straight to me.

I have been pulled over many times though and a lot of cops don't care about the overpowered law. Once you get pinged for something they will be happy enough to leave you alone unless your a smart ass.

Re: I drive a TT in vic on my p's, and i got fined...

I am a P plater and i live in Victoria...and i did realise that i am only allowed to drive an NA zed not TT otherwise this is too powerful...and yes if you want to drive a TT on your P's in Vic it has to be the only car in the family...I have had my car for almost a year now...and i have not been pulled over once by a cop, only been breath tested along with all the other cars...but then again i give the cops no reason to pull me over by speeding or driving stupidly on the road...as like you. So i dont think you would have a problem with driving NA if you ask me as long as you behave on the road.
    cheers

You don't have to be doing anything wrong to be pulled over

we are not living in the 70's. A 'random' breath test is a valid reason which is why you get one nearly every time you get pulled over.

I have been pulled over a few times when I wasn't doing anything wrong at all. I also drove for over a year without being pulled over.

I think it is wrong to say.

Who is to say we were doing anything wrong?

Also your profile says 'Bendigo' try driving around south east melbourne  really.. anywhere inner-city is just as bad.

Getting pulled over by the police...

is often dependant on a few things and the personality of the law enforcer is one of them. If he/she has a thing about P plate drivers then expect to get pulled over. At the end of the day tho, if you drive sensibly regardless of which area you live in then no coppa has the right to fine you on any grounds. If you hoon around expect to get caught one of these days, no questions asked. :)

Wrong there is something you can do

Do your research before buying a car like the original poster is doing, how do you guys on probationary licenses plan on paying for potential damage you may cause in an accident??

Obviously insurance isnt going to cover a car you shouldnt be driving nor third party, so you guys must have heaps of money put away just in case.

Just be responsible after all by the time you are driving you are 18 years or over ie an adult, so abide by the laws they are there for a reason.

    My 2 cents worth.

    Flame suit on ;-)

i took a look at the list of cars vic roads had banned for p platers, and 300zx did not show up..
the list contained around 600 cars so itwas extensive, based on that i purchased my 300zx TT..
if a cop wishes to fine me, i will tell him to prove it to me because ive already checked, and know that if they fine me for it.. its complete bullshit, besides..
its the only car in the family.. so im safe anyway

p.s that was last year i read that.. may be updated since..
someone work out the 2+2 tt power to weight ratio..
    1580kg.. 206kw..
    im sure its under..

But doesnt this paragraph some it all up??

"Probationary driver licence holders must not drive high powered vehicles. A high powered vehicle is any vehicle with a power to weight ratio over 125 kw per tonne, or with an engine capacity to weight ratio over 3.5 litres per tonne."

    and

"If you are a probationary licence holder, it is your responsibility to make sure any vehicle that you drive is not a high powered motor vehicle. The penalties for driving a high powered motor vehicle include a heavy fine, and may result in licence suspension"

2X2 ZX weighs say 1.6 tonnes?

Also note that the vehicle lists including the up to November 2003 list state at the bottom of the pdf that the lists are not exhaustive, sorry to say mate I dont think it would be hard for the Police to give you a hard time.

Also how do you insure something like this, and what happens if you hit a merc or something?

I actually work for an insurance company, and trust me they will get their money from you one way or another if you hit one of their insured parties and it wont be pleasent for you either.

If you can live with this good luck, better you than me.

As I said ingorance is no excuse the laws are there for a reason.

    Regards

    Re: oh no..

Maybe go for a dyno run and get the shop to downgrade the car's KWs (ask for a bogus reading). I believe the operaters can enter certain parameters like ambient air temps to falsify the readings. Should be cheaper than the fines. Get a printout and keep it in your glovebox :)

    Just a thought!

    hmm..

I have worked it out.. most that is "legal" on your p's is about 190kw which on a 91' is 133kw per tonne.. (1500kgs.. they use the "factory weight")

So a TT is out of the question or a dyno as suggested ;)

Loan approval soon, then shopping :)
