OK, I have decided to make the leap and do a plenum pull!

As part of my quest to fix my low/rough idle I want to get my injectors checked out and cleaned which seems to require a plenum pull. I figure I might as well get as much done as I can while the plenum is off, bypass under plenum hoses and the like.

I am hoping I can bribe someone who knows what they are doing to come along and help out and anyone else who wants to help out and learn how to do it would be welcome too.

As the injectors need to be sent away for cleaning I guess it will have to be over 2 weekends. I was thinking of starting early-ish one saturday or sunday, getting everything pulled apart and as much done as possible, sending the injectors off to be cleaned during the week (anyone have any suggestions as to where?) and having half a day the next weekend to put everything back together.

I would be putting on a barbecue or pizzas or some such and drinks both days and if someone who knows what they are doing and has done it before wants to help out/direct I am happy to offer whatever bribe seems appropriate. Ideally I would do this at my place but if someone wants to help but would rather do it at their place for whatever reason and doesn't mind my car sitting around at their place while the injectors are being cleaned that is fine too.

So, who is interested? Any hints and tips?

Also, Hyper101, where did you get that tent thing you had over your car while you were doing your plenum pull? How much was it and was it any good?

    yep i'll help out...

this is all dependant on dates pete, but it should be fine. I have done a plenum pull before, but mine was a little easier as my hoses have already been bypassed and I have no EGR valve. Still, I'm sure I can help..:)

    Cheers

Pete, If it's on a saturday I'll come (work all day on sundays) to watch and help where I can. I need to do mine too and my car is an NA also so I can learn some stuff before I attempt it.
I was thinking of doing the under plenum bypass, clean injectors, replace injector and coilpack connectors and EGR valve (I want to keep it) and also the JT PCV reroute (I burnt alot of oil when I went upto DECA last time, the car was smoking all day)... no bling for me. I bought a set of cam covers off Moses to get the holes tapped so I can swap them over for the PCV reroute. I'll probably only have time to do mine during uni holidays, my car is my daily driver so it can't be off the road when I have uni.

Tent thing came from SuperCheap for about $150 or so. Its good for about 6 months in the weather, after that it all starts to disintegrate.

And end up over the fence :)

I had already volunteered you to help out, thanks for the confirmation though  , and an Aus spec specific tech article could be worth doing too.

Thanks, anchoring it to the ground was going to be my next question, how did you stop it flying away in the wind?

A saturday is as good a day as any so I don't see that being a problem.

I am looking to learn how to do as much stuff like this as i can so I kind of want to do it for myself as much as I can.

    Thanks though.

fair enough, although if many people are in the job you might not be learning much. a plenum pull should only really be done by 2 people really, one person on each side of the car pulling off everything in their way....

if your doing the bypasses then a good hint would be to not worry about getting off any hoses instead just go sick and cut them all, any pipes (water hoses, vacuum hoses etc) just cut them all as you will (should) be replacing them all....otherwise you will realise that you will be replacing that hose you spent ages on trying to pry off...

read the tech articles over at least few times before you start...there are a couple of different ones, read all of them...;) ..if you dont understand something in them search for the answer or ask someone...

before you even start this make sure you have everything that is going back in. enough new fuel hose, vacuum hose, water hose, clamps etc....probably the biggest thing would be adequate tools ;)

its worth it to remove your bonnet first before this job, it makes the world of difference....

dont forget you dont really need to do all this work to get the injectors out. you can dremel the area of the plenum to get the injectors out and in without having to remove plenum...you'd need a nice little vacuum attachment to be sucking up all the filings as you dremel away...although if you want to do the plenum bypass etc then its good to do it anyway....make sure you dremel the areas of the plenum before putting it back in so in future you can remove and replace injectors when you want. search this up caz has done it and few others ;)

ok this is where the bug infects you if you leap into this...

since you have a week to play with it would be a good idea to clean it up a lil...some sprey cans etc...also you could get your plenum powder coated. tell them when you suppose to be bringing it in so they have it ready for u before the end of that week....they can also dip it in acid before they powder coat it so the inside is all clean....

then you might aswell get your throttle bodies blinged up and so on and so on hahahahah jk...if you get carried away just hope you know where to stop. because anyone who has started knows there is no stopping ability :(

plenum pull/obypass ... gaskets ... peter, in addition to

the gear mentioned by chad, you will need the following gaskets :-

    2 x throttle body.($us 13.50).

    1 x IACV.($us 1.80).

    1 X upper to lower plenum.($us7.90).

2 x rocker cover (rubber), left and right hand.($us16.00 each).

prices quoted by coz@conceptperformance.com, july 2007, plus $us22.00 global priority postage ....

    .. and locally, 3 x O-RINGS for balance pipe (2 x 34 ID x 2.5mm...1 x 18 ID x 2.0mm) ... cheap as chips, around $2.00 the lot, from allied bearings ..)

Thanks for all the advice, I have been reading as many tech articles as I can and also looking through lots of old plenum pull posts. A lot of it is confusing but seems like it will make sense once I am doing it.

I will probably print out a tech article and a checklist to refer to while I am doing it too.

I am planning on doing all my preventative maintenance and rejuvenation stuff before I start on upgrades and cosmetic stuff so hopefully I will be able to stay strong and resist the temptation to start polishing and powder coating everything that comes to hand...
