My rear main gave way this morning and my car is in for a new rear main + tranny band adjustment + tailshaft condition review by tailshaft experts.

For tailshaft I asked the following:
Question: Go with a 1 piece or 2 piece?

Answer: one piece units tend to vibrate at high rpm for eg. if you have a 4.1 diff ratio where high rpm is common. In these situations, if there is any slight wobble in the shaft there is the potential that it will snap. (Had one in store recently) and even more so with a high performance vehicle such as ours. In addition to this, the manufacturers are conserned with underbody clearance a one piece has to be angled more to get to the diff.

    This makes sense to me.

Question: What is better as far as uni joints goes. Non greasable or greasable?

Answer: Greasable is better b/c if you grease once in a while they will be kept in perfect condition.
BUT!!! eventually the rubbers from the caps will dissintegrate and grease will come out and the caps will eventually need changing. Untill this happens though the unijoints will always be in prime condition. Apparently the person who I spoke to said even after 5yrs of him having them on his car he has not greased once and the tailshaft is still fine.

Where I'm stuck is, is it easy to get to the unijoints for greasing once fitted to the car and everything is as per normal?
Were only looking at the 1st half part of the tail shaft. From memory the rear end of the shaft closest to the centre bearing is accessible but the end closest to the g/box Im not sure about.

Anyone know if the end closest to the g/box is obstructed by the exhaust?

What type of uni joints did you guys/gals go with if you have either a 1 piece or modified the original and why?

    Thanks

    Peter

    The front universals......>>

Are hidden by the exhaust and the heatshields that prevent the exhaust heat from melting the center bearing.
