Good quality tyres like Federal 595, not cheap chinese tyres

LOL Federal 595. They are cheap Chinese tyres.

The only way you're gonna get quiet tyres is by either going silica compound, A symmetrical tread or by spending dollars on decent Japanese tyres. Sumitomo, Goodyear, Falken, Toyo, Yokohama (although they get noisy when they start to wear down)... Dunlop's have been crap for a few years now, and don't get me started on Bridgestones...

Just get yourself a hella noisy exhaust to drone out the noise. :p

    What size are you running?

thanks for replying boys, but I must agree.. the 595's are pretty sub par.. I run 235/45/17 all round. but 8.5 at the rear and 7.5 at the front :) I heard that Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 or Pilot Super Sport were pretty noiseless? Moo, would you be able to direct me to some nice quiet tires? after all, our 300ZXs are Grand Tourers haha.

Well, personally, I used to sell them.. And I saw SO many problems with them that we had to cut our ties.
I'll give you a short story of what was always happening.
As you probably know, Michelin are a very soft compound, they put their own certain "mix" into the equation, which was cool.. But unreliable. The steel belt to polyester would separate, thus, bubbling and shortly after, blowing out. The Michelin group didn't want to hear it, and would NEVER... NEVER cover warranty claims. It was very embarrassing on us, customer there, left with their cock in their hands, and we were soon to follow... Not being able to do anything, and having this problem happen far too many times, we cut the account.
Don't get me wrong, 3 years ago they were quiet beauties, I don't know how they are now, though. And not sure if they have rectified the problem, either.

It's good that you have 235/45x17... Very popular size..
If you can find someone that is a merchant for Sumitomo ZIII, they are an awesome, quiet, grippy summer tyre, or P01 tread (directional) are a great all around tyre. Goodyear A symmetric 2's are brilliant all around, and would probably last a little longer, though sacrifice a little grip (very minimal sacrifice.. Still grippy as hell :)) Toyo, any tread design... Falken, as long as they're A symmetrical.
There is also a cheaper tyre there, weak side wall, only 1 ply, but very grippy and substantially quiet for what it is, is Jinyu. Name sounds like hell, but they're rad for the price.. You should be able to get one in that size for 110-125 each fitted and balanced. :D
For the other ones, expect between 180-290 each, you always pay for quality!

Ring people around, get the best price.

But yeah, just my 2 cents after working with the blasted things for 5 years and trialing nearly every brand under the sun.. Do what you wanna do from there :)

I use Goodride (China Tyres) on the fronts. SA-05. Also SV308 for a longer wear life. I paid 90 buckes each for 235/45 x 17. i only use them on the fronts as thats the widest fit they make in 17"
I cannot fault them, wet OR dry and being a long time motor racer, Im reasonably aware of what works and what doesn't.

very nice reply Moo, I definitely agree that larger and more "mainstream" tire companies are more likely to be turned a blind eye on, will have a look at those brands but all in all, I just want nice quiet tires that are comfortable and willing to sacrfice some of the other things as I drive fairly slowly :D

We used to sell Goodride tyres, and I would have to agree. The exacting brand to Goodride is Trazano, same factory, same tread, different name. Problem being is they're a little noisier than the ones I suggested, they're on par with Kumho and what not.

    Thats interesting Moo!
I cant say Ive heard anything out of them untoward tho. I have thre SA05's on the Pullstart (205/45 x 16) and the SV308 on the Zed fronts. No noise issues i can determine really.
I read quite a few reviews on them from Europe and the general feel was a very capable budget tyre. Thats exactly what i got. And ill get them again!!!
Sadly tho, my supplier down here in Tassie close his doors.

Tektrader Z32 Hoe, service me baby

Most high road noise tyres have HUGE wide tread gutters running around the centre of them.

IE: Like these horrid POS tyres I had on my ute.

I chucked the SV308's on my mates R33, in a 235/40x18 all around... The things hold the road well, and I was surprised with that for a cheap tyre! As soon as he got defected and had to put his stock exhaust back on, the whirring noise drove him and me nuts. No shockie scolloping, no flat spots, perfect run out in the tyre, just noisy... Replaced them with Jinyu's... Man that was a difference! 45,000km down the road, and the front ones are holding strong.. Back ones are near ready to be changed but. :p
You're probably driving too hard to hear the noise! :p
But like I said, he used to run Kumho's, and he had the same noise issue. That's why I relate the two together. Same decent grip, good wet weather grip, good wearing, just a bit noisy.

Hmmmm.. perhaps Im less bothered with tyre noise. I just dont notice it.
According to posts above with 275/17 Federal 595's out back and 235/17 SV308 Goodrides up front then i should pretty much need earmuffs.......!!!!!

Altho 2 completely different cars, IMHO, the 205/16 SA-05's are far superior in every respect to the very good SV308's.
Minimal steering wheel angle and brilliant feedback along with virtually no screetching up to dangerous cornering speeds from the SA-05's. Ive not been game enough to extend them as the rears (*Silverstone something or other) simply let go into a wild tail out!!! Wet grip is sensational! Ive never been able to go fast enough to find the limit in the wet...... pretty high praise from me I can tell you!!
Thats on a small FWD car tho. I really rape that little car and the tyres step up every time

The SV308's on the zed front require more wheel to turn hard, (more slip) and gracefully begin to sledge and howl when asked the bigger question. Wet grip is excellent and predictable.
I couldnt get any SA-05's when i needed them is the reason the 308's went on the zed fronts.

    Newhoo, just some observations.

Yes that was a great reply.
I would have to say the Federal 595 275 x 17 on the back of my car as noisey as heck.
I have since mentioned to the seller when replacing front tyres and he said he doesn't stock them anymore as they have had too many complaints about noise.
so I would stay away from federals ..

    fetus Cowboy from hell.

Have to agree with pirellis being good, I currently have pirelli zero nero allseasons all round 235/45 r17 (and am so impressed (traction wise, grips better than most tires do when its dry on wet roads) I doubt I will ever use anything different, no road noise thats noticeable either (then again I probably wouldnt know over my exhaust anyway), payed $180 each installed from bob jane when they were on special a while ago not sure what they normally are.

Bridgestone re001 which we used to have on the zed were I think the best tyres we've used on it. Were grippy as all buggery and were fairly quiet. Since when bridgestone went off shore and we couldn't get them cheap, we ended up trying some kumho ku31's on it. While these were pretty decent when new, we found them a bit soft with a weak sidewall and progressively more noisy as they wore. After this we put on some federal 595's to which are still new and we haven't done a heap of km's on them. While they're firmer then the kumho's I can see them being noisy. All of which isn't a big deal to us, as our exhaust it louder then most.

I've also run the ku31's on the wrx, and same deal. Noisy when worn out. But just recently I've put on the newer Bridgestone re002 tyres. And they've so far been great. Road noise is noticeable on the shitty roads up north here, but on the good highway roads an such, they're super quiet. More than acceptable. Bonus is Bridgestone warranty. We got an irreparable puncture, they replaced it for free. Good value to me.

When the zeds tyres wear out again ill be getting re002's on it again.

FYI, I've got 2x 595 235 45 r17 sitting around needing a home. Pm me if you're even remotely interested in them.

    Cheers.
