OK this is a two part question... So I've fit a new alternator (from group buy) and I can't for the life of me get the bastard to tighten up. Here's what I'm doing 1. Install adjuster bracket and make sure it's positioned as far towards the driver side of the car as I can get it. Tighten to buggery. 2. Loosen alternator pivot bolt. 3. Loosen the bolt that holds the slider to the adjustment bolt. 4. Insert adjustment bolt. 5. Tighten. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is doing my head in big time...
Either the wording is a bit funny or you're doing something wrong, the adjustment bracket has one bolt to hold it to the oil pump, there is no real adjustment at that point. With the main pivot point and the tensioner loose the alternator should be as far over towards the crank shaft as possible IE: towards the PASSENGER side not the drivers side - but you know this surely!? You need a belt that is only just long enough to slip over the water pump, crank and alternator pulleys at this stage. Then simply spin the tensioner bolt in a clockwise direction until the belt is tight. Assuming the threads are all OK and you have the correct length belt you can't go wrong If the alternator will not pivot all the way to the crank end of the tensioner then there is an issue - I've seen this before with after market alternators and it makes it a real PITA to tension the belt, you literally have to wind it on by rotating the engine and then get that last little bit of tension from the tensioner.
Hi, yeah i probably worded it poorly. Problem is I'm getting all the way to the end if the adjuster and she's still too loose. I think it's new belt time... Really should have double checked the pulleys before selling my stock alternator...
Group buy alternator pulley is a lot smaller than stock. I have Nissan belt 4PK965 on mine, is a tight fit had to take off water pump pulley then install it with belt on if that makes sense.
What a pain in the arse! I'm running a Ross harmonic balancer so will have to measure up and order a belt in the morning...
Well that makes things a little easier... 965 I'm assuming is 965mm? I got 98cm with the tensioner just about all the way to the crank end -no wonder it was hard for you to fit! I'm thinking ill try a 980 or a little smaller (still had some room to move). ****ing PITA with a "bolt on" part though -and of course it has to be the belt at the rear... Ah well last thing to do and I should be back on the road next weekend
move the adjuster to a position where the belt is at it loosest. Then string a bit of thin rope around the pulleys and measure the length. Thats how long the belt needs to be
