Yikes... got a problem with the starting the Zed, or at least attempting to start the Zed. Seems like the batteries got power, but the starter motor isn't even attempting to turn. A few starts back I did notice a funny sound just before the Zed started, that sounded a little like a belt slipping for about 1/2 a sec.

I'm assuming that the starter motor itself has packed it in, but wounldn't I get the same effect if the starter relay has died? (where is this by the way)

I'm charging the battery today, just to be sure its not that.

Going to be a pain to get it fixed if I can't move the car.

Anyone got a spare starter motor lying around ;-)

Sounds like battery. If battery is ok check voltage at the starter motor.

    Don't think its the battery...

The battery's a wizz bang Odyssey, so should still be going strong, and besides that there doesn't seem to be any attempt to turn the starter motor at all.

I heard the fuel pump prime, and then pretty much nothing.

I'm assuming you can only check voltage going to the starter motor whilst cranking, so that'll be difficult with one person!

    Anything else I can check??

Gene (YellowZed) might have either a spare starter motor or

some advice for you, as I think his starter packed up a while ago. It does sound like starter motor though, or starter solenoid.

TurboZ do a tech search for starter relay article as this could be it also!

Agree that first thing is to check battery - If it is below about 11.70 v

i think then electronics will prevent motor from turning over.

Couple of other things to check:

How's your alternator? Might be the reason if battery is low. I had a dicky alternator when I bought my car. It was managing to keep sufficient charge for the first few months ..... until I added power amps to the stereo.

Do you have an imobiliser? i.e. Is the car imobilised or imobiliser malfunctioning?

    cheers,

    Peter

    Don't overlook the obvious >>>

Check battery terminals are clean & tight. Starter motor bolted up tight with good connections.

Sounds obvious I know, but Zeds have a problem with starter motor bolts working loose. Also, I see too many cars (not just Zeds) with poor battery connections.

    Thx - Fixed :)

Ok, got a chance to have a good look at it, and it appears that one of the U-beaut connectors to the battery terminals is not making a good connection... have managed to come up with a bit of a temporary fix to get it to have a tight connection, and the car seems to be starting fine.

    Phew!

Yay - bring on Sunday's BBQ cruise

    ;-)

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys.. was getting primed for a starter motor replacement...
BTW was quoted $165 for a 2ndhand replacement in case people are wondering.
