    yeah .... good idea, so is fitting a simple on/off switch to a fuel pump / starter motor / ignition ..... blah blah blah....

    I've even seen a ute with a 1/2" chain bolted to the floor pan and it then went up through the steering wheel and then pad-locked back onto itself....

    At the end of the day none of these things will prevent a theft, including the tracking system..... but atleast with the tracking system the cars location is pinpointed with accuracy and in real time and the theft is noticed far quicker than .... " it was under the carport last night!!!! "

    For me its ALL about the monitering of the car......

    someone is watching it 24/7 even tho I may be posting away, taking a dump or at work with other things on my mind.....

    someone is watching my car right now, who's watching yours ...

    I'll see if the old mate is still working for them, if he is I'll pass on his details.

    may take a few days.........

    Speaking of cheap points, based on evidence and not hearsay and fear, it is more dangerous to stand in the sun for a couple of hours than to use a mobile phone for a year. Alternative points of view are fine, as long as they're supported by evidence. Arashi's point of view is not.

    Back on topic, what would we be needing to look at from a group buy perspective? It doesn't look like the the sim card + gps tracker options are too expensive to sort out. :)

    Hell, you could get an old iphone for $200, stick it in the dash with a sim card and mobile me, and that'd do the job too!

    Hi Linda,

    I have an iSpy system of some description (I say 'some description' because I'm both mechanically and electronically retarded :p) that was installed for me by a good friend that understands such things, and I find it very simple and easy to use.

    It uses a SIM Card that I've contracted from Optus for $5.00 a month, and has GPS tracking, remote start (illegal, I know), remote kill, remote arm and disarm, sends SMS's to up to (I think) 4 programmed numbers if a sensor is tripped, and can be used to make and receive phone calls (e.g. call the Alarm System and speak to the F@#K-W!ts that decide to steal your Zed)...

    I'm sure there's more to it, but that what I know...

    The SMS gives 'Sensor Tripped', 'GPS Coordinates' (Latitude & Longitude), 'Velocity' and 'Direction'... Here's an example of an SMS:

    Door Open
    S35 19'40.638"
    E149 10'34.656"
    V0.00
    D310.9

    Apparently updates every couple of minutes, too...

    Hope that gives you a little more idea...

    Lil' Baz..... :zlove:

    Take a look at this - or simply search ebay for 'GPS tracking'
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Real-Time-GS...0733518939?pt=GPS_Devices&hash=item3a60e1e05b
    - Receive an SMS the moment your car's door or bonnet opens without deactivating the alarm first;
    - Call your car's GPS to immobilize it instantly in perhaps three different ways;
    - And if, amazingly, the car is stolen - it'll at least tell you exactly where it is!
    And all for so little money - you wouldn't even bother waiting for a GB!

    Some great ideas coming out of this - thanks

    Awesome response to this post- So many out of the box ideas from members - impressive
    I am pursuing this idea regardless - I agree with badzx - I'm hoping joyriders wont be in it long enough to joyride. Apparently most thefts are not by specialists thieves but by passing instant thieves - so any car is fair game - We are not a ferrari but i was just saying that ours is a very likeable car by a mojority, it looks good, looks fast and has a bloody big TWIN TURBO joyrider magnet stuck to it - so we are at risk more than a goggamobile would be.

    Many Stolen Z posts are available on this forum - even recent - it happens.

    Insurance would not pay for my car, it may pay for any Z - but not mine- like most forum members - my car has been modded and personalised the exact way I like it - To rebuild the exact car is a nightmare thought and a very long time

    Definately pursuing all ideas listed at the moment - Definately into a group buy if it heads that way and interested in further follow up by members into their respective ideas - some really impressive ideas evolving here.
    I really appreciate every single post - this post is really progressing well -all viewpoints have helped a lot in keeping context.

    I am confident we can get somewhere at the end of all of this and will end up with the best solution available for all of us members to benefit from

    thankyou all - keep up the good posts!

    I designed a system like this for a local company, not mentioning names but they charge a fortune. Simple systems available from china for under $100 that are much more realistic unless you're doing fleet management.
    Still, a fuel cut can't be good if they're doing 200 on the freeway...

    I was fortunate enough to find a '95 model that not only had a full log book service history (only serviced by Nissan dealers), the last time it was in a paint booth - it was being built! So if it went missing, I expect it would be very hard to replace with the same and there's no way an insurer would pay me what I believe the car was truly worth to replace... Sure, it's not a $300k exotic european supercar - but it's not a $20k late model falcon either which could be replaced with an absolutely identicle model within a week.
    When I've finished on my Z, it's going to take one switched-on car thief with plenty of time on his hands to work out how to steal it!

    Hi Linda, the company which owns JayCar is called Electus Distribution - I have a wholesale account with them! Please let me know the JayCar part number of the kit you're looking at & I'll see what my wholesale price is ordering it through Electus - they have different discount levels based on the number of units being ordered. Actually, they seem to sell the shadow system in modules but I can't find the GPS feature on their web site - sometimes a new catalogue will advertise items not yet in stock & therefore, not yet shown on the website.

    Ok great, it's a new product so it's not on their website yet but it is in their latest catalogue which sometimes means it won't actually be available to order yet...
    Anyway, my pricing (based on ordering at least 4 of each of these) is:-
    LA-8966 - $237.01 + freight (3 point immobiliser alarm system with back-up battery siren; 2 x code hopping remotes; blue LED for dash; built-in programmable turbo timer feature; central locking control & blinker relay; auxiliary input for other triggers; built-in 3 axis tilt sensor with vehicle movement sensor & impact sensor functions);
    LA-8967 - $88.51 + freight (GPS unit to allow vehicle tracking and sms features);
    LA-8968 - $14.81 + freight (additional remote controls)

    The only things that I can see are missing from this system is a switch for the bonnet, the impact sensors which some people like to put all over the car for when jerks start to 'key' panels & the ability for the owner to send the system an sms to immobilise the car if it still does get stolen.

    Well this product certainly does a few things the other doesn't but then, this is not actually a car alarm. Don't know how much they sell it for but you can generally buy GPS units with identicle features via eBay for around or just over $100 (search for GPS tracking on eBay with other contries search selected).

    PS - when I saw your post header saying 'wait before jumping in' - I thought you were going to tell everyone that 'she' is actually a 'he' - hahahaha

    Vader Just another guy

    That looks good - however you pay $1 for every message you send to it (and every message it sends?).

    And, at $595 + $176 for 12 months monitoring, plus $135+ installation, that isn't cheap.

    No vote for GB on this one from me.

    There is a GPS gizmo at Aldi.
    Needs an active sim card.
    You have an app on your smart phone and you call it, then receive a location of your car on your browser screen.
    Something like that.

    Sorry, l didn't take a pic of it for you.

    PS: might not be as good as what l thought from the quick look l had.

    If you don't find it useful for tracking your car, then you can always use it on something else, as per the suggested uses. So not a complete waste of money, like some of the other stuff
