To increase spool/response which mod?

    Hey guys

I'm tossing up between a selin twin intake or adjustable exhaust cam gears.
Just seeking advise on which mod to do to increase spool/response and ultimately decrease lag... basically where would my money be best spent.

    Already have a second AFM/pods.

    Mods are as follows.

    - balanced/forged bottom end wiseco, eagle, ARP
    - rebuilt heads, mostly standard with ports cleaned up/matched
    - AMS HPC coated manis, Z1 GT2860R (GT675RS) tube outlet turbos, plazmaman FMIC
    - Toyz 3" dumps, twin 3" exhaust - stepping down to 2.5"
    - n/a rear end

Currently doing a twin in/out fuel rail with 750cc injectors and a Tomei reg and will be tuned with nistune.
Currently taking it easy on stock tune with some timing taken out, gate pressure with a light right foot.

Starts to spool at 2800rpm, making boost at 3200ish full boost at around 4000.

Future upgrades would be a 2.5" intake kit maybe a complete 2.5" turbo pipe kit.

Once tuned i would like to see 330rwkw @20-22psi though on the street more than happy to keep it safe at 15-16psi. I know this would have been acheivable with the smaller GT2560R turbos though I got these at a great price so couldn't argue.

    Thanks guys
    Matt,

Can tell you now twin intake will not improve spool response.

    Havnt said your intercoolers.

Twin intake will help spool response. So will a 2.5" intercooler kit with big coolers. Will also help.

    Really Karl nothing at all?

Plazmaman FMIC and all standard piping for now, do you have a twin intake WhiteNight?

Ive got selin, with the z1 2.5 intercoolers, piping and throttles, with highflows, and full 3" zorst.

    Zero boost lag.

Rest assured, 2.5 piping and 2x intake will assist spool.

Have you tested this back to back.?

I don't think a selin/ twin intake will help spool at all.
I'd agree that a full intake tract being. 2.5 or 3" would help however I am looking at this myself except for custom piping needed to match my FMiC =(

I think you'll easily make 330 matt, you should be near 350 even @20psi (which makes me wonder why I bothered with head work )

    P.S. what cams

I noticed no difference whatsoever when I went from single to dual MAF. The only benefit I see for going to Dual Intake is less restriction for higher HP yields and also to avoid the 500HP MAF limit.

But Karl, I read on the forum that blah blah blah...

Likewise I didn't notice any difference going from stock to 2.5" compressor inlets. Plenty of people will say otherwise. Or tell you that your experience is invalid because of XYZ.

Up to you to make up your own mind then Zed. But for me if it was exhaust cam gears or a twin intake on RS turbos, you know which one ide pick. Esp seeing if it starts to spool at almost 3k. That's terrible drivability.

What are you trying to achieve Matt? You do have to face the fact you are driving a turbo engine that was never designed to bring boost on quickly unlike the cars of today with variable vane turbos. The bigger the turbo, lag is sure to follow.

The Selin dual intake, translator and second MAF you are looking in excess of $600 plus you need to get it tuned. Personally I think your tune is where you will find your biggest gains for the least amount of outlay.

I managed to get rid of lag altogether and maintain big HP but it involved the purchase of another car!

Shhh keep your forked yellow tongue behind your yellowing teeth !! Haha

But agreed with what you have said which is what I also found, unfortunately you can't escape lag on a zed with larger turbos.

Unfortunately that's where the RS or even GTX2863 starts to spool and there isn't a "spool reduction" mod that you can do to alter this too much,

When you go for turbos the size of twin gt2860 your not looking for drive ability though really are you?

I know the car will make the power I was just thinking of what I can do before tuning to take full advantage of it rather than make adjustments and then the benefits are not as great.

    Stock cams/valves.

Just a quick street car with enough to give someone a fright, which is what it does now I was hoping to just make some improvements. My personal preference on turbos would have been one step smaller GT2560 which would do 300rwkw but I got these at a steal so I went with it.

I just need the translator and intake kit it will come to $350 already have an AFM and pod.

Maybe I will just tune it and leave it at that.

    What did you buy Karl?

The main difference with this is when the stickies would run out of puff in 3rd or 4th these still haul ass.

Though the stockies were more predictable where as the 2860s are either on off and can catch you off guard.

People on here are still trying to single out one performance mod to measurable gain.

It takes a combination of upgrades working together that gives you the output/result.

The more breather mods you do the broader your powerband becomes.

Matt I'll take you for a spin in my car and you'll think I have an air leak when spooling.
There is no peak in my torque curve it virtually runs flat to redline.

    REMOVE ALL RESTRICTIONS
AND THE TURBO WILL SELF FEED ITSELF.
