not everyone spends their dosh the second they get it on something that isn't needed for street use.

Start putting things on your zed mike456 instead of buying more stuff :p

That quote is fine for $440 for a one piece tail shaft.. I got my CB and taill shaft balanced at the start of this year by the bloke who does all the v8 supercar ones.. Cost $220 cash and done a pretty good job.. Could of got more money out of me if he wanted too but he said he didnt want too.. Great bloke too and use to race also... I am thinking of going a one piece i think Cresta had some for sale for the same price or something... Good thing is it has interchangable uni joints :)

    Why not

put a new centre bearing in, if that's what the problem is!
If its uni's also, a one piece would make sense, but if its only the bearing i'd be replacing that, and spending what's left on other things. Nissan's set up is tough as, don't think i heard of anyone breaking one yet.

It's not beaking you have to worry about, just the uni's wearing out. I had a dodgy centre bearing (occasional vibration), and replaced the bearing and had a constant vibe over 70 coz the unis's where rooted  I then got a one piece made up and now vibe over 90  Oh well diff bush kit soon :)

By the way if anyone wants a centre bearing with 200k's on it you can have it for $50

It seems the tide of opinion has changed over the past year re: one piece tailshafts

I remember when I first got my zed, and searched about the vibration, it seemed that people unanimously supported the one-piece.

Some reported continued vibration issues, but this seemed to be put down to not having it "balanced" properly (whatever that means).

THe advantages were stated to be

    a) lighter total mass, so less rotational inertia and more power to the wheels
    b) gets rid of 'unis' which can't be replaced on the old jobby.

More recently I have seen some posts saying that the one-piece is the inferior option, and that nissan wouldn't have put a more expensive item in without good reason (which also makes sense).

    So now I'm confused.

    a) what does it mean to have a driveshaft 'balanced' - is this standard terminology for workshops?
    b) what are the 'diff bushes' - the cradle bushes or something else?

Can some one help me as well?

I hurt my tail shaft a while ago and had a really bad vibration so I had the shaft rebuilt by Veem they balanced the shaft and redid the joints (not the middle one only the ends) and they said they went anal on the balancing so I hoped for the vibration to go and most of it did but there is still some there and it changes depending on how much gas is in the car (i.e. wait in the back) and I can only feel the vibration through the drivers seat and hear it in the dash but you cant feel it in the passengers seat . I don?t think it?s the shaft they have had the shaft out twice and guarantee to me that its not the shaft so what else could it be? The diff mounts? And is there anything I can try to narrow down my search?

I've heard that the g'box mount can cause vibrations, along with the diff and rear sub frame mounts. Have you had your wheels balanced and aligned lately? Good place to start.

To get your driveshaft balanced is to have the centre of gravity of the shaft along the axis of rotation. They do this at the shop on a big fancy machine that welds little bits of metal on to the shaft to move the centre of gravity.

If the CG isn't along the axis of rotation the shaft is gonna start flexing outwards as it speeds up, this is what gives you D/S vibes.

One-piece T/Shaft is technicaly less advanced in design to a 2-piece. However, when the 2-piece is prone to wearing out the uni's(which can't be serviced and so must be replaced), then the one-piece with replaceable uni's and 2/3 the weight becomes the superior option IMHO.
The argument that Nissan wouldn't put something in the car "unless it was necessary", seems to be totally ignored when items such as, AIV's, EGR systems, HICAS Rear Wheel Steering systems and the like, are mentioned.:confused::confused::confused:

AIV's where removed in '93 as they weren't deemed necessary, EGR is only there because of the greenies, and 'Real Drivers' don't like the technical gimmick of HICAS, which was just the Nissan engineers showing off to the rest of the world (And it feels downright weird...)

And the 2-piece Tailshaft was included in the 1989 Z32, and is deemed unnecessary by many in 2006.;)
HICAS doesn't "feel weird" to me, and I am known to throw the beast around from time to time.
Given that I started driving about 48 years ago, you would think that these "new fangled thing-a-me-bobs" would feel weird to me, even more than to you youngsters(but they don't).:p:p:p:zlove::zlove:

    Answer (I think)

After reading all of the above posts I'm not quite sure if Ricky's question was answered.

The vibration you described is most likely the tail shaft as mentioned, a lot of us have been there, but bear in mind vibration like that can be caused by a bent wheel, shitty tyres, engine and box mounts ect ect.

Take her to a mechanic and ask him to check out the tail shaft. If it's a problem put in a one piece (it's cheaper). The one I have uses Holden V8 unijoints so its cheap to fix in future, as well.

Whilst your there get your mechanic to give your Z a good look over, and give you a report on any problems he/she finds. You may spend a few dollars more than you wanted to, but a well maintained Z costs less in the long run.

The only mechanic in Melbourne I'd take my Z to is Lindsay @ The Zshop in Glen Iris ph 9885 3366. Another who has a good reputation is Nissport in Braeside 9580 2660. take your pick.

Not the first (to my knowledge) but certainly one of the first, and 2-3 years on I haven't had a single reason to regret that decision.
I'm not sure what the point is that you are trying to make with your last comment.
