    Hey guys.

So my mate is in a dire situation with a recently bought twin turbo 300zx. Its one off the forums, with a rebuilt engine, new turbos, rebuilt gearbox etc.

Well the original owner did all that about 3 years ago and didnt really drive it since then to now (5000-6000kms).

We bought it off him for about 7 grand with an onsite inspection and test drive, thinking we had gotten a great deal (inspection of undercarriage showed a dry sump, turbos etc). Car also drove well for an untuned twin turbo.

Well recently it started leaking and we had it inspectd, and seems the turbo gaskets, rocker gaskets and rear main seal are leaking slowly.

Im quite unsure as to how that could happen as I have receipts and all those parts were replaced and reserviced, etc.

So in the case of my mate, I contacted Moulazx who I've known for a while and inspected a zed with before. He suggested, knowing my mates financial situation and what not, to hold a tech day for the forum and maybe we could get the issues fixed.

My mate is happy to feed you guys, etc, even pay some money if thats what you want, if it means he can save from going to the mechanics.

We would need tools (engine crane, jacks, etc) but I'm putting this out there for now for the response.

Located in Sydney by the way.

    where in sydney?

what do you mean turbo gaskets? if you mean turbo seals/blowing smoke on boost then this is an engine out job to replace them which changes everything

if Emile comes I'll probably go as we work really well together (I crack immature but uplifting jokes while he does everything)

What happened to you showing up to Saturdays tech day like you said you were going to? We had plenty of spare time, most of it was spent doing cosmetic things to my car.

Main seal shouldnt leak sitting around unless initial problem with old grove in crank and same positioning of new seal .

Like Anti says apart form the main lines there shouldnt be oil leaking in turbos (could be drain tube possibly).

Cam covers should be ok too as one is sealed with silastic and the other rubber . Unless rubber perishes in 3 years ? The breather tubes may be loose and can leak there and cam sensors at the back also .

I would check Cam seals , could be similar issue with the main crank seal .

Are you sure it has all of those leaks? General rule of thumb is clean it up first and try to pinpoint the leaks before you start pulling things apart... start with the highest point ie rocker covers (which can conveniently be accessed with the engine in) and go from there.

How much space does your mate have available? Does he have tools? Crane? Engine Stand?

What Rob said. Needs to be thoroughly cleaned and re-inspected to pin-point the leak(s) mate. If it is indeed from the Rocker Cover, being at the top of the engine, it could be fooling you into thinking the oil is coming from elsewhere near the bottom. Also if the Turbo seals are gone, it won't be leaking oil onto the ground, but rather as nice plumes of smoke out the exhaust...

If this goes ahead, you better have a few sausages on the BBQ, been freaking ages since I had a really good one... just saying. :p

Also, did you do an oil change recently? The addition of a crazy 0w oil or an over fill can give those leaks. Also if the PCV's are blocked it can force oil out the main seal.

If the car has been left sitting for a period of time the rocker cover gaskets can dry out and start leaking once the engine is given some road time.

Also a significantly leaking rocker cover (being the highest leak on the engine) can then cover the turbo, and bellhousing join giving the appearance of a turbo and main seal leak. Thats whats currently happening on mine, but I'm too lazy to do anything about it.

What you should do is seeeee....rip the plenum off and reseal all your rocker covers, soak you PCV's in petrol while doing it, degrease the underside of everthing, and put it back together again. A full days work if your not schooled in the VG30DETT, but not a difficult job. That would be my first step, and most of the Sydney crew are well versed in this job.

I got a feeling that could be it as the car was not driven much and was sitting there for quite a while. Seems like we could start there then with the Sydney crew haha, and yeah I've never even worked on a VG30 nor do I have the tools to, knowing how they are so it seems a good starting point.

    Sounds like he will come!

Do you guys have the relevant tools by chance or could we even do it at ur house cause I dont really have a suitable garage and my mates from ACT.

My mate was in ACT and had found out about it on Friday, and was pissed off and it was to short notice as well cause thought people wouldn't have relevant tools.

Yeah probably will need to do those as everyone is pointin out now.

Nah we have some basic tools but were still young guys and haven't really accumulated much tools so dont have crane or stand.

Yeah my mate was saying that he can sometimes smell burnt oil when driving but that could just be oil dripping on to the exhaust from those locations as aforementioned.

When I checked it before he left to ACT, there was oil on the suspension arms and some near the sump.

Anyone have a garage or driveway their willing to donate for this as my garage isnt really suitable for such work?

If you have tools its a bonus
