hey iv just bought a 1991 TT 300zx it has a blown turbo i was wondering what is the best option to do either swap both turbos for bigger ones or just rebuild the blown one...and how much would it cost replaceing both turbos with out installation...thanks

best option is just to upgrade. You will have to whip out the motor anyway. Might as well put new turbos (upgrades) and injectors whilst your there. GL with your dreadful mission ;(

What you do = how much money you can spare.
You'll have to pull the engine realistically anyway, and while off you are best fixing both turbos cause if one's dead the other may not be far behind.

Now like ed300zx said, rebuilding the stock garrett turbos again may cost over $1500. Alternatively you could get those Hypergear ATR25 turbos rated at 280HP. But you'll get more lag than a stock rebuild and to get the most power out of those (or any other larger turbo) you'll also need to get bigger injectors plus an appropriate tune for these injectors, plus other associated mods like IC's and exhaust. (i'm not sure what supported mods you have to suite a turbo upgrade.)

So Stock rebuild may be around $1500 + labour for engine out and in. (maybe couple grand)

Bigger turbo is cost of turbos (say $2000) + bigger injectors ~$1000 + cost of a new tune. (and realistically, you need other appropriate mods to accommodate bigger boost like intercooler upgrade and exhaust...)

Maybe get some quotes to help you decide which way you can go. :)

A little off topic, but what would be a less laggier option (other than rebuilding stock). Or would larger turbos with other supporting mods compensate for the turbo lag?

Pretty much any turbo upgrade will increase lag so some degree. Increased lag depends largely on what size turbo you go, apart from that yes, supported mods will help reduce lag a bit. Things like honing manifolds, flowing heads, boring your block, etc...

same old story though, depends on how far you want to go which is directly related to how much money you want to spend.

So you need to find a happy medium/compromise if you want little other work done.

A good example of this would be the Garret GT2560 turbo. which if you get some 555cc injectors, upgraded I/C's, Zorst, Pod, Tune and maybe some honed manifolds, you might be seeing around 300rwKW (or ~400rwHP).
And no need to do heads, cams, bores etc... - and you'll only see about an extra 1000rpm lag compared to stock turbos, but an ass load more power! :D
    (Just an example though)

zeds with big turbos are a whole different car.

you can have a turbo that doesnt lag much !! if you put on the correct supporting mods.. ie larger manifolds, 3" dumps. dual intake etc etc..

there a ton of fun man. big dollar exercise. but a ton of fun

The other option is just to send them in for high flow. Can make a single turbo to flow 320HP and every thing bolt back to where they were.
