Aussie delivered Zeds all have the seatbelts in "normal locations". Most imported Zeds had them converted from the door to the normal locations, but some, like mine, did not, and stayed on the door.

To my knowledge I thought that J-spec Zs had the seat belts mounted on on the doors, I know my Z does and it is imported. But I also thought that when they were imported, as part of the compliance process the seat belt was to be mounted to the usual spot.

    Hi
    Do a google search - 300zx history
and select "Nissan 300ZX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"
There is a timeline and history on the Z32
1994 - Seat belts redesigned; they were moved from door mounts to true pillar mounts.
Some other will add more detail for the answer you seek.

My kids got a 1990 NA J-Spec import - seatbelts in door
Mine 1990 NA Aus-Spec - Seatbelts in door
Mate has 1990 TT Aus-Spec - Seatbelts in pillar (cause he moved em ! )

    Hope this helps

JDM 1993 NA - On pillar
JDM 1991 TT - On Door

It is supposed to be a compliance item. But nissan started to move them later in the production run (post 1993), so there really is no 'right way'.

Having them on the door is good, because they are easy to reach, but bad when you want to open the door while still buckled up.
On the pillar is good, but hard to reach back to grab the belt. Door pillar looks cleaner too without all the seatbelt paraphanalia hanging off it

There is another plus to the door mounted belts - makes it tough for any carjackers to open the door and pull you out.
