    Hi guys.

One for the historical zed gurus. I'm looking at getting out titanium key cut soon and i was checking out the keys we have. To see which is the best to copy from. Dug up the spare key that we've never used in all the years we've had the car. It's totally different to any jap key I've seen.

Looking at it is has silhouette embossed on one side and royal clover on the opposite. Along with a tiny clover leaf.

What do you all make of it? Is it just a blank that someone has used and it's became the spare. Or it's it meant for the silhouette silvias.

Either way, your thoughts are welcome.

The "Silhouette" Silvias were race cars. I doubt they had a keyed ignition.

could be a random key. the halfcut i bought had a key in it still, it was gold colour like that, and had a head of the queen as the picture.

probably should have kept it now thinking of it.

Royal Clover is a company in Japan, linked to Mazda, an example of one of their popular keys is the Pole Position Key, can get it online at places like http://rev9autosport.com as seen here:

Not sure what the Silhouette on your key refers to....

But on a side note, while searching for info on silhouette keys, found these nice ones at http://fifteen52.us (you should recognise them):

Ah cool. Something a little different than. Seems to be a good quality blank. Nice and weighty and doesn't seem warn at all.

Odd thing though is I googles it too but never came up with those results.

Thanks everyone. Now to just confirm it will work in the doors and barrel before i use it to get the titanium key cut from it.

you should have a 4 digit code on the black key, which is the code a locksmith would use to cut the key perfectly for your titanium one rather then a worn old key, that way it will be a perfectly cut new key!

While on this key talk gentleman
I took my titanium key to three places and was told they couldn't cut it.
I have a red and black zed key, the red one works in the boot lock, and the ignition, the black key opens the doors. both keys fit in every lock, they just don't turn

Is this normal? I would really prefer to have one key.

The red key is a valet key - profiled so as it still keep the car secure.
The black one is the master.

But the black one doesn't start the car?

How worn are the keys? Boozx.

Also, i know about the 4 digit cut code on the black key, issue is if the key is perfect, but the locks are worn, it will potentially cause an issue.

However, having a pefect key and getting the locks rebuilt, or replaced. Thats the perfect setup....yet costly.

I would say pretty damn worn, i would love to get the whole thing replaced, maybe a better option is installing a decent alarm and remote locking unit and just having the ignition key cut...

Does anyone in Brisbane find somewhere to get these keys cut? I'm getting sick of being turned away.

Stop telling them that its a Titanium key. And if its worn, do as was suggested and use the key cutting code to get a fresh key made and than try it on all locks and barrels.

No worries, i never mentioned the titanium thing unless they asked me.
they more had a problem with cutting the key. Perhaps just dodgy places?

I'd get it cut by the number.
If you do happen to find that the lock is playing up with a 'fresh' key, add your own 'wear' to the key with a small file to make it a little more compliant. Leave the flats on, focus on the jagged points at the transition between pins.

You can always recut a key cut to new specs, but it isn't so easy to get a worn key back to spec.

When I bought my zed it also came with a Royal Clover key.

Don't know what happened to the orignial. Maybe the original owner kept it as a momento.

It's my understanding the door locks are changed as part of compliancing (don't know why), I had something similar with the Silvia I bought many years ago.
The boot lock doesn't matter for compliancing so it usually doesn't get changed.
I also discovered tonight that my Titanium key doesn't open the door on my Z :( but like yours, it does work on the boot & turn the ignition. In my Silvia, it was only the boot that the key didn't match.

I went to Rivercity Locksmiths at Oxley (Shop 7/ 1118 Oxley Rd, in a set of shops few hundred metres from Bunnings). Gave it to them, they looked at it, knew straight away it was titanium, enjoyed the challenge of cutting such a meaty key and it cost me $5.

I'd recommend you get it cut from your old key, not the code, otherwise it may be difficult to turn in your worn barrels and (ironically, I guess) that will make it feel like an old key every time you have to jiggle it around to turn it.
