i drove my Z about 1300km on the weekend, well the first 700km was fine then when i was coming home there was some rain, (i have no splash guards underneath the car), and the motor started misfiring, this sort of went away for the most part but after that when i put my foot on the accelerator pedal basically nothing happened, it would cruise at around 2500rpm with a little bit of missfiring but generally ok, when trying to get more revs though nothing happened, the turbos were spooling according to the boost gauge, anyway, i took the car for a short drive today and all seems fine again, anyone have any thoughts on the matter, i have decided to take the engine out anyway and do a stock rebuild on this one, and build the beast motor after that with the spare one i have
Gee BHP first Dub now you who else will succumb to the strange goings on on the west coast??? I have no idea but strange though BTW off topic did Dub solve his probs?
No splash guards! Hmm Many of us have had trouble in the wet when not running splash guards. Probably due to the AFM or some plug getting some moisture and going nutty! Seems temporary and usually gone when thing dry out! Check out all you plugs are still tight and maybe hit them with some CRC, MB
yeah zx2nv, i'm pretty glad i decided to pull out of the PI trip, i'm sure the car wouldn't have made it and the logistics of blowing the motor over east then trying to get the car back home would simply be a nightmare, look out Warrick in 09 !!!, car will be finished by then, hopefully,
basically it would go dead then fire up to about 4500rpm ( this is in 3rd gear) but it wouldn't hold the revs and would die again, in the end i just limped it home at about 90 - 100kph just under 2500rpm also, i have an apexi single pod filter, brand new series2 ptu, removed oem recirc valves, blitz bov's, all my turbo hoses need replacing, but i did clean and oil the pod filter whilst in Perth, so that was sweet
AFM plug or unit itself. I was in a similar situation, running no splash guard and the seal around my nose panel had gone walk-abouts. Anyway, everytime it rained it got symptoms like you describe...then It just shat itself completely. Try airing out the plug and using some WD40 or RP7 or one of the thousands of similar products out there. If it dosn't work try another AFM. I hear theres a few not in use is WA you could try.
BHP .. yep, warwick, 2009 ... you have a bit of time to get your arse into gear ...!!!! .. lol.. !!! .. cos the QLD force will be there in numbers.. and power .. yea ..!!! .. .. and in the meantime .. how about getting that magic bremmer bay, joy juice on the market ,, absolutely top stuff .. waiting, waiting ....???? ..
well, buggered if i know, drove to Albany today, 400km round trip and the motor didn't miss a beat, ran perfectly, the problem with the motor seems only to happen when it rains so there is really no way to test it other than drive it in the rain till it starts playing up then run back to the shed and try to figure it out, it's a real pita
As Andy said, plus ... liberally apply dialectic grease to clean/dry AFM connectors before reconnecting.
This is a comon fault in the UK. Good news is it's nothing to worry about and real simple to fix. I'm betting that you have a cone filter induction? If so what happens is that the rain runs off the bonnet and past the rubber seal between it and the headlamp pannel. It then runs under the pannel and drips into the cone and wets the MAF sensor. The car will only rev to about 2.5 rpm then cuts of quite violently sometimes. Apexi and HKS filters seam more prone to it than say the K&N and the Green Stuff Cones. To fix it just get 4 brackets with L bows on the end and a piece of Alloy and bend it round to make a sheild over the top half of the filter. bolt the brackets to the MAF bolts and L bow ends to the alloy. Remember to leave a 1/2 gap so a not to restrict air flow. If you haven't got a Cone filter then perhaps the shielding from the air box has been remove to let more air in. This is worse because unlike the other which will clear after half an hours driving this one gets worse. Remedy is put shielding back. If its neither of the above then your MAF is leaking from the top seal on the square gubbins box.
sounds like you have it there Mr Zedski, yeah it's a "cone" or "pod" filter, i will try that remedy, sounds like it might be the fix i am after, hopefully, cheers
