    red32 You talkin' to me?

Quiet night at work last night, came out to my car to find . . .

    THIS:

    I'm sure that hole wasn't there . . .

    Improvised door key . . .

If you look carefully at the seat, you can see the handle of the small screw-driver the nice people used to unscrew the dash fascia, so at least that wasn't damaged. All-in-all, I think I got away with minimal damage, and nothing else seems to be missing (including a $300 socket set in the boot) and no obvious attempt to jimmy the ignition. They went through the center console (hence the papers scattered over the seat) but there was nothing of value in there (not even the key to the security nuts on the wheels).
One good thing . . . they didn't get to the speakers, which are worth more than the head-unit!

    Bastards!

As a final word, I have to say that the staff at Epping Police station were extremely considerate and helpful.

sh!t dude thats terrible, i feel for ya! they obviously knew what they were doing though if they knew they would need a screwdriver to remove it, most stereos just need a good tug to get em out :(

That sucks... but it is good to hear it's being handled well and hopefully they get the pricks (sadly I think most of the time the stereo bandits don't get caught :( )

Good luck and I hope it was insured.

These sort of pictures scare me...

They scare me because I'm scared what I'd do if I witness someone doing this to my car

Really sorry this happened to you Doug.

Tell me about. I would love to catch someone in the act of doing this to my car. At least they didn't get your speakers. That's the same reason I plan to mount mine in the stock locations :D

You read of things like what happened to Andymac and think "That's terrible", but this time, for me, it's personal.
The monetary value of what has occurred is fairly minimal (medium priced head unit, one window, total about $500, plus repairs and inconvenience) but it's the invasion of ones own personal space and callous disrespect for the property of others that gets to me. I cannot imagine how I would feel if I'd found my car in the condition that Andymac found his.

One thing the Police suggested is that I start looking in the "Cash Converter" -type stores in a few days to see if they have any head units the same as mine for sale. I have the serial number, and there was a CD in it which cannot be removed until the thing is reconnected to an appropriate power supply.

Unfortunately, most of the surfaces in a car (especially if it has been open to the weather overnight, as mine was) are apparently not all that suitable for lifting finger-prints from (the only suitable surface which was handled (the dash fascia) was covered in dust (which smears the prints; memo to self . . . in future, keep interior of car immaculate), so finding the actual head unit from my car is about the only way which may lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators.

Ive got to the point that I dont even have a radio in my DD Commonwhore. Its been broken into 3 times over the last 2 years , the damage caused outweighs the value of the budget radios I used.

My VK 2 years ago was in mint condition, 80,000km on the clock. Now its a fracked piece of crap due to such damage and people smashing into it with no insurance :( Still only 86,000km on it.

So Doug I know exactly how you feel and it sucks bad :mad2:

I've owned and driven cars of one sort or another since 1964 and this is the first time any of them have been broken into... I'm not sure what I feel, apart from outraged!

    I feel for you.
That has happend to me but not in my zed. From that moment on i have always insisted on a detachable face head unit and always take it out. Yes its a PITA but ive still got my head unit.
    Cheers

The Sony unit that I used to have did have a detachable face, but after several months I stopped taking it off 'cause it was so inconvenient (that opinion may now change)! Unfortunately the concrete block through the window would still have occurred so the scum could find out the head unit had a detachable face!

    ah shite dougy..:(

man, those pics really sadden me, considering I was in your car at phillip island and playing with your stereo while we doing the targa rally. I hate thieves, damn lowest scum in the world...

The same thing happened to my Sigma many years ago, when it had my old Alpine system in it. But I caught the little bastards, gave chase, and managed to get my stuff back...

I hope you get it all sorted asap...

    Cheers

    Doug

I have a Sony Head unit at work here.
I DON'T know if it works, it needs leads though.

It's been sitting under my wheel alignment computer, so i'm not sure what the story is, but it's yours if you want it. no cost obviously.

    let me know.

    Question though,

Was the 'Key' your own lump of concrete out your back yard?

Or were the bastards 'smart' enough to bring their own?

    "here's one i prepared earlier"
