Steering issues

    Hi guys

I've run a few searches and had a look at the tech section but cannot find another issue that fits my situation.

Over the last few weeks I have noticed that the steering response on my 89 TT 2+2 is getting worse. At first I thought I was imagining the problem, but it seems to have become worse with time.

It's a little hard to describe, but basically the steering is now extremely 'soft'. It feels as though there is some 'play' somewhere along the line that makes a minor movement of the steering wheel effectively do nothing. If I turn hard one way, then need to go hard the other way shortly after like on a windy road, I need to turn the wheel further than usual before the car actually responds and starts turning the other way.

Obviously it is becoming dangerous and I'm keen to get it resolved asap.

Any ideas? Could it be related to a wheel alignment issue?

Can't see any leaks, power steering fluid is full and all tyres are pumped evenly.

I am going to take it to a workshop to get it checked out, but figured I might drop in here first to eliminate any simple issues you guys can come up with!

    Thanks guys

    Justin

Oh and the hicas light isn't on, but I may attempt that diagnostics procedure in the tech section just in case
