I fitted new pads a month ago and have a squeal during moving very,very slowly in traffic when just touching the pedal.I have sprayed the brakes with the special spray and have put the red goo between the shim and the back of the pad.Is it ok or normal to put the red goo on the back of the shim,the part which touches on the piston?I have used search on this but cant find definate yes or no....suspect this area is where the noise is coming from....Thanks
Just take it to a brake shop mate, I had a hideous squeal from mine, couldnt get rid of it, took it to a brake place 2 hours later, all done no more squeal
hey dude i have the excatly the same problem.. only on my rears and definatly noly at snails pace speeds.. i did the exact same as u have. pulled the pads cleaned them up and then used the red goo between the shim n back of pad and a little around the piston.. i found that it helped alot but the problem came back after 2 weeks or sooo..
i also have Slotted rotors and bendix pads make sure you have the little spacer plate that hooks onto the caliper where the bolt goes,mine were squeeling as i forgot to put them back on,now no more horrible noise yours maybe missing from someone else doing brake work
Were the pads the embedded as per the brake pad manufacturer instructions? By memory the procedure for Bendix pads is on the box itself...
yep they were bedded in correctly.. and i changed them myself but will a little help lol.. actually havent heard it for a while. its been so wet here in sydney, i have just been concentrating keeping the thing on the road lol
I have had this issue ever since I changed to slotted rotors. I give my brakes a real hard work out and the noise goes for a few weeks.
It's not unusual for new brakes to be a little noisy when they're wearing in, but if it continues it should be looked at to make sure the caliper seals are all ok etc
my brakes used to squeak before i got them upgraded.. maybe its the caliper seals as you said.. is there a way u can check them?
Recently applied blue spray on gunk and virtually no squeal. As you say Karl, a good hard drive works wonders
If it's really bad the calipers themselves will actually leak and will be damp or have an oily build up on them which also indicates a fluid leak. Alot of people forget to bleed their brakes aswell after working on them which can also cause problems. Replacing the caliper seals is pretty easy, I've done this on a few Z32 calipers now as I have them on my Z31 T and also my mates Z32 TT. http://twinturbo.net/ttnettech/caliperrebuild/caliperrebuild.html If in doubt, goto a brake specialist though. I'm just throwing out suggestions as to what can cause brakes to screw up. A trained eye should be able to pick up what is causing it in no time if you're unsure yourself. This is all for when the sound doesn't go away after they've been worn in of course...
when i changed the rotors and pads i blead the system with new brake fluid n they dont apear to be oilly from what i can see.. thanks for the link ill give it a read
I'm just throwing out ideas, not a lot can go wrong with brakes when you know what it is to look for ...
hmm im just wondering now.. because when i was at the brakes shop getting my front rotor's machined they inspected my rear brakes aswell, which they told me the rotors were beyond machining and needed replacing. and they said nothing about leaks or seals on the caliper when they were removing them. and i even told them about the squeak before hand .. maybe its time for a new brake shop
Well that's just one cause but if a rotor is under a certain minimum thickness then by law (and common sense) they're not allowed to remachine it because they'll be way too thin and could fail or just not work properly. If all they did was replace the rotors and this fixed the sound for you, then in your case that was what caused the squeaking. When rotors warp they have high and low spots which can cause noise, and when it gets really bad the whole car will shudder when trying to stop it. Other things which can cause sqeaking are sticking caliper pistons, misaligned calipers, glazed rotors etc If everything is brand new and it still continues to make loud noises then something is up and it needs looking at. I do not recommend using "special stuff" to get rid of brake noises, as it could be covering up something more serious especially if the sound returns. Again as i said this is only if the sound doesn't go away after the brakes have worn in properly.
