Speedo calibration

I used to have a 320km speedo in the zed and now have a 300km speedo, I have also installed a digital speedo that reads directly from the ecu, now compared to my digital speedo the needle on the 300km speedo always reads 10km higher. How do I calibrate it to read the right speed? Would changing from a 320km to 300km speedo face have anything to do with it? does it need a different resistor? I have read the article in the tech section but seems complicated to do that.

You need a resistor, if you only replaced the face (just the flat bit) then obviously it would read 20k's out. If you replaced the whole unit (Flat bit including the rest of the electrical bits) then it should give you an accurate reading. Otherwise there are empty resistor slots on the gauge that you can re-wire in.

get a trimpot. its like an adjustable resistor. wire it in just the same way you wire in the resistor, and tweak it by a turn of a screw and its set ;)

Yeah i noticed people talking about a trimpot, what does it look like and where do I get it?

the one i got was a 10turn trimpot 100ohms i think. that was for my boost gauge. dont know which one you'd need for your cluster as they all have diff ratings...maybe someone can confirm which one he'd need ???? you can get them from anywhere that sells resistors. dick smiths, jay car etc... tell them exactly what you want it for and they may be able to help you which one you need. there are all diff trimpots.

When I put a 300 km speedo into my TT, I made the soldering changes (as suggested by Zcar91's article from memory), and still found my speedo out by an amount -

    -3 at 60, -5 at 80 and -7 at 100,

So i removed the top off the dash cover (the curved bit of trim above the speedo) and drilled a hole above the trimpot that adjusts the speedo on the instrument cluster (there are 2 trimpots and I think it's the one on the right as you look forward). I then used a screwdriver to adjust the Speedo, while driving with datascan running on the laptop to match the ECU speed to the speedo. I then taped up the hole.

    Cheers,

    Peter

screw all that crap and take it to a speedo place ,it will cost a whole $50 for them to do it properly ;)

not really keen on paying someone $50 to take my dash appart, keep my car for the day stress me out not knowing what they will stuff up, then tell me they don't do zeds. Rather learn to do it myself doesn't seen so difficult now.

you take out the dash cluster, drop it into them and it takes them less than 1 hour, you dont take the whole car down there :banned:
Many people have farted around on clusters on here and ended up screwing them up,just ask mafi lol, then you are up for another,do the math :)
If you are unsure what you are doing, some things are better left for the pro's

Wouldn't you need the car to do it? they will have to factor in things like bigger wheels and other factors that affect the reading, if I pulled my dash out and put it into a auto zed with stock rims for example wouldn't it read slightly different? so they will need my car to test it out to make sure it works 100%
Im sure I can do it myself just need a bit of info.

    Hi Luis,

I have read through your problem, have you considered smaller tyers :p

Or maybe doing a fully sik burn out until your speedo matches the ECU :bash:

One moment officer I almost have my speedo calibrated :D

    But seriously:

The problem is we dont know how your current speedo has been modified to get the results its getting now, it may be in a "stock" configuration for a factory 300k speedo, and the mod details for the 180 - 300 may be unsuitable. Is it a dial overlay or a complete 300 k speedo ?

Any way if you want to have a twiddle with a trim pot try this one:

    http://www.jaycar.com.au/productVie...d2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=

Its 20k as compared to the 18K resistor, theres a 50k version but 20k should have enough adjustment. (not knowing the stock value of R10 and your current setup I could be wrong)

But if you are like me and dont mind throwing small ammounts of money at things for better setups, consider this:

    http://www.jaycar.com.au/productVie...d2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=

No matter what you do, wouldnt it be better to calibrate it to an GPS or a dyno rather then the ECU reading ?

BTW you still havnt posted some pictures of that sexy wing :D
