I am about to outlay for a stereo system in the car.I am not going full on but just want something to listen to while driving without the full on doof doof setup. I was hoping to retain the car in standard trim and under the original speaker covers there is not enough room to fit decent speakers.

So I am guessing that to retain the standard trim and not maul any door panels etc I will be looking at fitting some speaker boxes in the rear boot area .

Am interested in how others have overcome this problem and especially if you have installed speakers in the rear boot section .

Would the speaker cable that allready runs to the rear speakers be suitable ( I cant see why not as I am not amping anything up).

    Input appreciated.Tks .

If I were you I'd get a set of 6x4"s (round $100) chuck them in the stock spot at the back using the stock wiring, and get a good pair of 6" splits for the front (round $250) and run new speaker wires from the head unit to the doors. Chuck an entry level, decent brand 2 channel amp in the front for the splits (i got a sony xplod 222w one for $77 from strathfield last year).

It'll sound much better than original and isnt expensive.

Dont bother with rear speakers and pay more for some good splits for the front.

    Mate if your after speakers

checkout jaycars precision response kevlar 6.5 splits about $139, they sound just as good as my brothers $650 kappa infinity 6.1 perfect's. why pay more!

Yeah but you may as well chuck some 6x4s in the back, it just gives you a much fuller sound. Ive got $70 cadence ones, with pioneer 4 way 6" in the front, and they do the trick fine.

without mauling the cars original panels etc.It is more the installation than the product comparison that I am seeking .Though thanks for the info

Good 6 inch splits in front &

I ended up ditching my huge bass speakers that were mounted in a stainless box and just put two 6inch subs in place of the orig rear speakers. It's easy enough to do just get a wooden (craft wood) spacer and mount the subs below the spacer and as far to the outside of the Z as needed to fit the plastic back on. I figure 2 x 6inch is about as good as 1 x 12inch ... well maybe not but it gives an acceptable amount of bass.

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

Good question, cause in the front doors the speaker surrounds

are like a triangle shaped hole instead of being plain round.

Any easy tips without having to break that apart??

Re: ok how are these speakers installed

I've currently got 6" speakers in the rear, they fit straight in. I had to drill new holes to mount the speakers though.

I'm currently in the process of installing the system. Definately get some decent splits up the front. I'm not sure about how to mount the fronts, haven't tackled that yet.

Were you going to make new speaker boxes for the rear? cos if u are I'd recomend ditching that idea and just get one sub box.

I've had a play around with my system, with no amp and a 52W head unit, The 4 inch kenwood splits that came with the car sound ok, but get drowned out when the car is on. 6" speakers in the rear (JL audio splits wired to the crossover but no tweeters) give it some more bass, not much. Still gets drowned out by the engine though.

I installed a 4 channel amp on the weekend, and It can be turned up so you can hear it over the engine/exhuast. And it doesn't distort when I turn it up. The bass isn't great, but u can tweak it so more bass/power goes to the bigger speakers in the rear.

today I borrowed my brothers 12" Sony sub and hooked it up to the amp, disconnected the rear speakers, and put the front speakers through the high pass filter, and the sub through the LPF. Sounded quite good! I'm definately ditching rear speakers for a sub. Was thinking of possibly getting another amp for a sub and keep the rear speakers going.

I know u didn't want to go around with the doof doof. But seriously If u appreciate sound quality I'd suggest 4 channel amp, splits and 1 sub.

I've also heard good things about the jaycar range, I was gonna get a jaycar sub and amp and maybe splits as well, but size was a concern. So I'm looking for subs and amps that have a small footprint.

    speakers u need to get...

    hey bro, how r ya?

my names reg, i'm still kinda new 2 this, i usually do installs systems and what not, so have a lil bit of a know how with systems as such...if u looking some a cheap and nasty system, i would advice u try and get ur hands on maybe a pair phillips 6inch spilts (usually around $100-200 depending on which entry model u choose) for the front, and maybe kicker 6x4's for ur rear...now if wot want a puncy bass, then i would advice you to get JL, Cadence or Kicker splits for the fronts (don't worry bout the back, fronts will give u enough bass, all the rear is doin is spreading the sound, u sit in the front anywayz)...

now regardless of which combination you choose, i would adice u buy a 4 channel amp as well to get decent sound out of these speakers...well thats just my advice....good luck with the system u buy:thumbsup:
