Sounds like a truck

    Hi guys!

First post and my first Zed (91 TT 2+0)! Been looking at a few cars here and its great to see such a good Z following in Aus.

    Ok.. down to the questions.

    1. The fan coupling on my car sounds like a bloody Mack truck when it engages! Very audible "whirring" when the car heats up. Is this normal for 300's or do I simply have to get used to it?

Would an electric fan be a better option?

    2. The car is twitchy when in a straight line... wanting to jump around. Ive put new wheels and tyres on it but yet to have the alignment checked... not many guys around here (Sydney lower northshore) can align with the HICAS. I know its hard to know... but is the 300ZX always like this? I must say it corners pretty well but the backend is definitely "out" somewhere! I can hear the humm of the back wheels working against each other.

HICAS muck up often on these cars?

I guess I should post some pics of her soon. Time to look for my cam!

    Cheers

    Whirring sound

could be any number of things.... there are an awful lot of spinning bearings at the front of any engine! Not uncommon is the timing belt pulleys but they're a big job to do so you'd want to be sure they are the ones.... an experienced Z mechanic should know.

As for the steering that doesn't sound at all normal. HICAS rarely is faulty and does this. Getting a 4 wheel alignment shouldn't be too hard, I just take mine to a Bob Jane and they can handle it fine.

    Coupling

The sound only happens when the front fan turns on (ie hot) so thats why I was presuming the viscous coupling. Just wondering if these fans are normally so noisy?

And funny but I actually took my car to Bob Jane and they said it was too low (only 2") for their machines and they couldnt align HICAS. Maybe I should take it some where else, but thanks for the advise.

    When the car heats up......>>

The clutch (engine) fan locks up and the thermo fan in front of the radiator cranks up, this can make a lot of noise. It isn't anything to be concerned about unless they are coming on all the time, which would indicate a problem with the cooling system.

I get my car aligned at Beaurepairs, and don't have a problem, but when it was really low (I raised it up slightly last year) there were a number of shops that couldn't align it due to the front bar blocking the aligning laser.

Slop in the rear end is possible due to worn inner or outer tie-rod ends. Jack the back up and see if you can wobble the rear wheels.
