    Hi all,
the other night we were out driving ... was a good night... then i notices i was not boosting as hard as usual .... pop the bonnet to check all plugs and vac hoses ... give it a rev ...:wacko: knock knock ..

I immeadiately removed the boost jet's and limped her home.

Went up to Gavin Wood's first thing the next day .... and advised it the Cam Gears.

Now i have done a search ... and can't quite find the info i need.

Do i need to replace the cams ??
if so ... should i upgrade these seeing as i am a power hungry bugger?

I also need to do a 100k service so as the timing belt comes off might as well replace that and the water pump correct ??

Now here is the hard bit ... I'm broke lolol so if anyone has an idea on how much this may cost .... or how hard a job it is ...
as i am considering benching the Z for a while in the garage and doing it myself ...

Any help would be greatly appreaciated ... i just need to know what really needs to be done

    Can you get more info?

The cam gears themselves are just sold chunks of metal, not a lot goes wrong. Is there a leak with the cam gear seals? Has the timing belt come off the gears?

I'm afraid if it's cam gears, the news aint good

If cam gears have slipped, broke, failed etc, will also mean the valve timing have moved and the knocking you heard maybe valves hitting pistons. I would start pulling out everything to take off the timing belt cover and rotate the engine and make sure all the cam gear/crank sprocket marks line up with those on the backing plate. The crank sprocket should also line up with the notch on the oil pump casing.

Just going into more detail sends shivers up my spine. Your cheapest way out if the worst has happened will be to buy a front cut for around $3-$4K and transplant the motor. Damage like this can cost around $5K+ if you need a mechanic to fix it.

I am waiting on a fax from GW to find out what's happening....
There diagnosis was purely a audio inspection so far.

Nothing had visually been inspected as yet.

I wil advise of more info as soon as i know.

Ok spoken to GW, there is no damage to my cam's/valve whatevers and evers ...

just some noise coming from the cam gears themselves.

Said that from Nissan they are $800 each ... of course ... but to use some of the contact's to source some cheaper.

So if anyone has an idea of where ... please advise thank you.

    Not all of them Ben

The inlet cam gears do actually have a function for the VVT inside. They can wear out or break. The exhaust are solid gears but.

    Already sussed ;)

2nd hand cam gears available if you wish to save big $'s over new.

Go with Gavin's recommendation for 100k service BUT ask him if OK to supply parts as you can source from Coz in US @ BIG saving.

Cam gears may be replaced at same time, and by GW, IMHO.

Oh alright and the late model ones are adjustable, if you want to be smart

    Not being smart Ben ....

My intake cam gears were assumed to be the cause of an oil leak. They are definitely NOT one piece. With the cam gear in his hand Joe was able to turn the inner, and this apparently is a no-no, and was the cause of a fine oil spray over my cam belt and other areas .

Fixed the problem with some second hand gears instead of paying bulk $$$ to Nissan - no more oil spraying the front half of the motor.

As you know, my motor is probably quite a high mileage unit - which could explain the wear.

    Best NEW & Performance Parts

I don't wont to over work Simon from TTZ Performance anymore then he is already, as he gets about 90 to 100 e-mails a day, and it takes him a few days to get back to me but he has a direct relationship with US companies and has helped me out so much with tech and parts. If you look up his site http://www.ttzed.com/ you might be able to source performance parts for barrelly anymore then stock nissan parts. As for second hand i am still looking for a good place myself so if you guys know keep me posted too.
EG mild cams not the full blown racing ones are around the grand mark which is expensive but compared to stock...anyway hope i have been of help. Adrian
