Can't believe it. I rang up Shannons to get a quote on car insurance so I can compare prices with just car insurance. Understandably the guy asks how old I am. Fair enough I tell him I'm 20. He then starts asking these bullshit questions like do I buy car magazines? Am I part of a car club? and do I go to car shows often? I'm pretty much no to all 3. So I was wondering where this was going...

...after this he states that "oh sorry we only offer car insurance to ENTHUSIASTS." At this point I'm absolutely speechless. How can they stereotype me as not a car enthusiast because I don't buy shithouse mags full of misleading info, or have time going to many car shows, or not part of a car club? So I ask him "so your not going to insure me because I don't buy car magazines?" He said they only offer insurance to people who consider cars a second religion! I never thought in my entire life I'd have to buy car mags to be able to get an insurance quote.

    Screw Shannons they suck :angry::thumbsdown:

Sorry to say, but I think Shannons is a great company!

They won't insure me because of other reasons. They ask most people these questions. Did you mention you were a member of The Australian 300ZX Owners Association?

    Just car quoted me $1465

That's for a $20k car with bodykit, $3000 wheels etc.

    $20k for a 300? you may be asking...but I actually bought a supra :embarrassed:

    PLEASE DONT HATE ME!!!

I just thought id ring around to compare prices. Other people I have talked to say that shannons are expensive.

There is method in their madness ...

Although they may miss some business through their calls on what does and does not constitute a car enthusiast they have their reasons.

Their experience as insurers is that if an owner is a car club member, maybe has a CAMS licence, and is a "car nut", then they are less likely to damage their pride and joy than someone who isn't.

This is why they will weigh up each caller or visitor individually. The approach mainstream insurers like RACV or NRMA is "we won't insure turbos" or "we won't insure grey imports" as a blanket policy. I would much rather have Shannons approach, under which I can agree an insured value, get full salvage if the car is written off, have a whole stack of modifications - so long as I declare them, and yet still pay a relatively modest premium of under $1000.

Contrast that with RACV: I had over 10 years car insurance with them - 1 claim of about $1500. 15 years house and contents - which I switched to someone else before buying the Z. They refused to insure the Z because it was an import, yet said they would insure me if I had other current business - for a premium of nearly $2000!!! My history with them meant nothing - as did my accident record.

Its not Shannons who sucks in my opinion.

Re: There is method in their madness ...

i got asked the same questions by shannons and pretty much answered yes to a couple of them including this forums. great price for me.

in the other hand, just cars gave me a fcked up price, seeing that i was 25ish, clear of accidents and only 1 speeding ticket out of my 7 years of driving.

i personaly think shannons is great, while places like just cars (heard many stories of so many happy teens and youngens with cheap insurance) may give a good deal, i guess it's only to younger drivers who have a higher probability of causing an accident which is probably deliberate by the company...... maybe i'm just wrong.

    btw, nice pic redzedmonkey

forum ... had two cars insured with RACQ ,, got an outrageous qoute from RACQ ..remembered the shannons "classic cars" ad .. phoned them cold .. virtually no questions at all .. they quoted something like $5oo less than RACQ .. outcome, insured at around $800 for purchase price of $15000, rating one, accident free etc ... no claims to date ... fingers crossed ...:thumbsup:

    i tried Shannons

but they didn't even offer me a quote cause i was 21 at the time, said i need to be over 25.
just car offered me $2200 full comp
young and cool offered $1900 full comp, however you need to do their 2 stage defensive driving course to get a cheaper excess and have one of their approved alarms to be covered for theft.
Gonna shop around again when I renew this year.

Is there any way to be insured with them while under 25?

I'm 24, and I seem to recall other people under 25 having luck getting insurance with them. Good thing with me is that I can say i'm a member of a club and 2 associations, been in an HPI mag and displayed at Autosalon Final Battle.

Just Cars for me want too much money to insure for a pittance of what i've put in the car. For a stock NA aus spec (my age 20 at the time) they wanted $4819 for the first year and add a bodykit, wheels and exhaust, they wanted $5200ish for the second year (no claims have been made so thats with a 20% no claim bonus!!). Basically for a group that brags about being so personalised and understanding of enthusiasts, they only wanted to insure it for barely over a stock imported example, no matter how much work has been done.

Also despite the extensive list of modifications I give them, the next year when it comes time to renew, only a handful of modifications have been recorded so I wonder if I was insured at all?? (as you have to disclose every mod and perhaps not having each one listed is there own insurance against me making a successful claim).

you can be under 25 but..

when i was inquiring i was talking to a sales rep at the motor show. he told me that if i was under 25 then i would need a good track record of car enthusiasm such as rasing go carts as a kid and stuff like that. i think he just wanted to get rid of me:thumbsdown:
Shifter man you really do have a lot of mods and if you are not classified as an enthusiast than who is?
and if you do a mod inside your renewal period than i think you have to let them know cause it may void your insurance. i think you can get away with non performance parts (like body kits) but if you have a aka than they will fix it with standard parts.

    They do insure under 25s

but only if you buy shithouse glossy magazines to be classed as a "car enthusiast."

I don't think $1465 is too bad for a $20k car, 1 accident history and only rating 3.

When they ask how many years you have been driving legally does that include the time being on your learners?

    You are a complete Goose.

Shannons advertise constantly using the "Insurance for Enthusiasts" statement. Knowing that, WTF do you think they were asking you the questions for? There have been countless posts on this forum relating to this subject, and even more posts saying that you should tell them that you are a member of the aus300zx Association. In spite of all this information you spit your dummy because you don't like being asked about your love of cars. IT WAS GOING TO SAVE YOU MONEY YOU DILL!!!!
They insured my car for $27500 because I was at a track day at Wakefield Park AND a member of this forum. It was also helpful that they could see that I, and most other members there, appeared to take a great deal of care of our cars (this tells them we don't try to smash them up, or that we try not to have them stolen)and in turn makes us an acceptable risk. It also saves us money!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Shannons are OK in my book.
