Hey guys Just wondering what are the best methods on rubbing back a freshly acrylic painted Z ? I also have a few other questions How do you determine when you are getting close to rubbing the clear coat back to much ? Will orange peel still be seen through the clear coat ? what about if I put it on thick and rubbed it back heaps ? How many days do I have to wait till I can sand or buff it ? What grit sand paper do I sand or what cutting compound do I buff with with ? Would a 2mm tip over a 1.8 tip on the spray gun have made much difference in regards to orange peel ? Cheers
First point of call would be to let the paint bake in the heat for a few weeks before rubbing it back or touching any part of it. Acrylic takes a very long time for it to harden. Yes it will feel hard and will sand and buff. But it will always retain some form of scratching. So best to leave it for easily a month before attacking it hard. Sanding wise. 800/1000 grit with water. Than go higher from there on, either with water or a liquid cutting compound. This will get rid of any peal that you may have. And only sand it enough that its even to the touch. Pending how much clear you've applied, you can usually sand for a while before coming anywhere near close to too thin. After that use a good cutting compound with an orbital buff, than get softer with the compounds. Eventually ending with a cream and buff. Acrylics "fairly" forgiving but you do need to be smart with your application. Is there any really rough spots? Powdering or crazing? Water marks? 1.8 vs 2.0, bugger all difference. I spray with a 1.2 - 1.6 and some times a 2.0 glass coat. But usually leave the 2.0 for priming. 2.0 tip lives in the pot gun most often. Which gun did you use? Gravity fed?
hey Thanks heaps for that, the peel is very small and is the same all over all what I have painted, its a very fine peel more like little dots but not as rough as over spray, there are no bumps/ runs/ dry spots ect its all consistent I used a brand new star gravity top feed gun with 2mm tip, I used 3000 grit on my nose pannel and inside my boot after 2 days and I think I took of all the clear lol, the guys I bought the candy from said 2 days is long enough ?? :S Cheers
theres so much to address here, and i dont have time for a lengthy post so ill just tackle the sandpaper bit. 3000? take every sheet of 3000 you have and throw it in the bin right now, it has no place with what you are doing, dont even touch 2000. you will not need it. use 800 on a block ONLY to remove drips, runs or major defects. 1200 on a block with soapy water is what will cut the peel out 1500 takes out the 1200 scratches then a coarse cutting compound, then final glaze and wax. If you used 3000 and took the clear off(which doubt) it means that you have fck all material on there so forget blocking it back at all or you will have to block the whole thing and re shoot it.
sweet thanks for the helpful info. Anyone know if a thick clear coat rubbed will help take out peel in the paint ? the car has no runs or lumps ect just a very slight peel cheers
yes, blocking the clearcoat will remove the peel. thats the whole point. as long as you have enough material on it, you can block it untill there is zero peel, your 1200 will do that, when you are blocking it, occasionally use a rubber squigee or something similar, draw it across where you are working, to dry the panel off and you will see the results of your efforts, you are blocking to remove the high spots which then blend into the low spots nad make the paint flat
On the subject of paint, i just shot some paint over the missus integra, heres the roof, off the gun. No blocking , polishing or even wax. the is 2k autothane clear
P.S what do you find is the best ratio to thinner the clear coat to ? The bloke I bought the clear from recommended %30 clear and %70 thinners ?
thanks again for the help, sorry for all the questions but I relay have no idea what I am doing, gotta learn somehow, its coming out nice tho that's the main thing lol
Thanks for the help guys I ended up getting a fair good finish on my test panel. It turns out firtime round I rubbed all the clear off the panel due t the 7 coats of clear being to thin, so I changed the ratio from what the sales person recommended %30 clear to %70 thinner to %40 clear to %60 thinner, came out a bit more peely but alot thicker. Personaly I think its coming out good for someone who has never touched a spray gun before, the car its self is coming along nice so far to. Thanks again for the help here are some pics, colour is a custom candy red mixed with orange on a metallic light flake base
