I am considering putting race harness in my Zed, but from what I understand you also need to have a roll cage fitted to keep it all legal. (something to do with roll over protection?) Can anybody confirm this. Where is the best place to get a roll cage for a 2 seater Zed from? How does the race harness attach to the car? Do you need any mods done to fit it?
Hi Paul >>> I can't give you specific answers, but here are some general comments: - AFAIK a roll cage is not mandatory with a harness. However it is most important that a harness be properly installed, and a roll cage may give you better mounting points. - Roll cages: Before buying one or having one made, you must understand why you are doing this and if/where/at what level you intend to compete with the car. I have not done the research myself, but I believe it is very possible that ANDRA and CAMS could have 2 different applacable standards for construction and materials, and a cage that may be legal with one authority may not be legal with another.A basic roll cage like some of those in Z's that come in from Japan may or may not be road legal; but I would venture to say that most of them would only be good for up to L2S CAMS motorsport, as above that they get very specific with what you can and cannot do.The Z Shop may be worth talking to depending on your level of interest and application. CHECK THIS LINK.
2nd hand one @ TTZED.COM I saw in the used parts section @ TTZED.COM they have a 2nd hand roll cage for sale.
Thats some good info. I hadn't really thought about it in terms of racing. Initially I only wanted to fit the harness, because I find it more comfortable and feel safer with one, especially around tracks. I would like to compete in more race events, so it might be worthwhile looking into the appropriate cage for different CAMS events. Thanks.
Hey Paul......>> If you are coming to the tech day next weekend I can have a chat with you about the CAMS regulations regarding the different cages permitted/required in different forms of motorsport. The two main things with fitting a harness are:1)That it is legal for both road use and competition use.2)It is installed in a manner that makes it legal for both road and race use.As a CAMS certified scrutineer I'm more then happy to sit down and help you with any questions you may have.
I have the Cusco half cage I guess you could attach the two straps over each shoulder to the top loop but I'm not sure if it is far enough back to provide enough down force to hold you in your seat (why else would you want a race harness?)You could get around it by attaching a mid bar half way down the loop to attach the straps too however.
From memory... The shoulder straps are to hold you against the seat - ie backwards. If they pull you down too much towards the seat, it will actually cause back damage. The lap sash is what is supposed to hold you down. I would say something at about the height of the rear strut brace would be ideal.
Do you have any pics >>>> of the cage in the car? Do you find it annoying at all (ie loss of headroom, etc)?
