Road Noise

After not driving the zed for a while, its great to finally be back in the seat and driving her on the road again - only one thing i forgot is how bad the road noise is.
Even though they are a low to the road car, its definitely quite noticeable even with music at a normal sound level.
I was thinking about pulling the interior out and doing a bit of sound deadening but then its a pain in the ass job after having the car apart, add to that my concern that once i pull the carpet out and put back in again it won't be the same.

Just curious as to what people have done in their zeds to eliminate or reduce road noise. Was thinking of starting with the doors, beneath the rear passenger seats and above the rear wheel arches as they don't require removing the carpet and are fairly easy to get to.

I haven't pulled the carpet out as the insulation under that is quite thick, but there's nothing in the boot apart from the floor - which I re-created as well. I basically used insertion rubber instead of dynamat (no way am I paying $75 a metre!) and bitumen spray for the wheel wells. I used 2 sheets of foil-backed tar from Jaycar in my doors. Here's the post from my thread:

A lot of road noise can actually be tyre noise. But not all tyres are noisy so..................

I dynamatted the whole rear end and it got a bit quieter. When I then changed the rear wheels it was like a different car - almost no road noise at all.

    Harden up princess :)

Seriously though, most of your road noise is the tyres, you can get super quiet ones.

haha thanks for the love and warmth guys - much appreciated.

only reason i comment is that i don't remember it being as bad as it is now - i'm not sure if anything has changed on the car while its been off the road that would do so though.

tyres were changed not long before it came off the road though.

Agree with others, most of your noise is probably tyres. Big chunky treads tend to be noisy and some uni-directional treads can be too. I find the biggest noise factor is my exhausts rather than tyres, but then I often drive with the window down especially so I can listen to them!

    1. spray sound proofing in your wheel wells
    2. get some good tyres
    3. get some vinyl sound proofing (jaycar sell this) and put it everywhere in your car as shown by kiz
    4. dynamat etc are not used as a sound barrier, they are used to reduce vibrations/rattles in the metal... u need a sound barrier which is like a thick rubber with vinyl look at the jaycar site and itll tell you exactly what is it made from....

no, dynamat is not used as a sound barrier. although it may reduce outside noise slightly, sound proofing is not its purpose. he needs a vinyl sound barrier.

that looks very good mate, how much of a difference did you feel. and where did you get ur sound barrier from ???

this is because dynamat's purpose is not to reduce outside noise... good that your tyres made a difference though, alot of the time thats usually the problem.

    Clark rubber - 5mm insertion rubber, $35/m.
It made a huge difference. No road noise and hardly any exhaust noise from the rear, just the drone from the exhaust remains, and even that is somewhat diminished.

thats great stuff mate, ill be using the jaycar stuff soon im going to be using sound deadening first, then the sound barrier on top.

my whole interior is coming out very soon i shall post a thread on the progress with it.

ill prob weight it all before i put it all in aswell. the sound barrier weights a bit. but all up it weights less than people think relative to how much of a difference they think its going to slow them down.

for ride comfort and having the ability to drive your car without annoying noises etc just makes it feel like a much newer car :bow2:
