Retrofit dash from other model

Just gonan throw this out there for discussion, but how feasible would it be to retrofit a dash from another model (say a 350z)?

Initially curious about what would be required, how hard it would be to wire, would you need a new or aftermarket computer and sensors, etc....

I reckon that (cost allowing) in the future I would look at doing this mod to update the look of the interior as well as custom dash etc...

At the moment this is just an ideas/brainstorming post and any constructive criticism will be appreciated :D

PS: I am WELL aware that what I am suggesting would not be cheap and would require a lot of work, but try and have an open mind :)

    Cheers

would be easier then most would think, a mate has just put a s15 dash in a r32, with relitive ease, alot of wiring, but easily doable, provided its a close fit, but in sayin that another mate MADE a r33 dash into a old hyundai SCOUPE

Sorry to take it off topic, but can you upload a picture or two of these above mentioned conversions.

    Cheers.

good idea rob, should be doable, but if you are thinking along those lines then maybe a complete custom cluster would be even better, that way you can pick which gauges to use etc etc...

Want to keep it looking relatively OEM, so if I could drop a ready made cluster in then that would be the go. To get the look of OEM using say Autometer gauges would involve a lot more custom work.

The main issue I see is wiring the bad boy together. Sure, the actual fit of the unit will be hard, but no point assembling a masterpiece only for it not to work

@ Josh: I am thinking more an overall conversion, both dash and cluster, in an attempt to modernise the interior. I also have an ulterior motive which is to free up a little more leg room ;) lol

@ Simmo: Ease up scrotum :p I have a major cash shortage building my house so the car has had to take a back burner. If I wasn't building, the V8 project would be underway and the car would already be painted :p

I know people that have done this with Ford Falcons in the past. Fitment aside, the dash gauges could be relatively easy to get working. You wouldn't be able to get that 350z clock/info thing to work without an OBD-II ECU I'm assuming? In which case I'm guessing you could fit a OBD-II ECU to the Zed from a 95+ model, unless you are happy to ditch the functions on that clock thing with something simpler.

Another big hurdle would probably be aircon/heater functions.

Maybe check out the fabrication section of mp3car.com? I know its based around Car PCs, but there might be others on there that have done similar things...and there is information on controllers that can be programmed to pick up signals from switches, etc and send commands to the computer and signals to others. In other words for the hi-tech stuff, you could have a small computer controller running behind the scenes?

    I don't know... just a few ideas.

    1) agree with ross, like what dub did witht he gauges it would be easy to modify an existing dash with new gear.
    2) if you are replacing the WHOOLLLEEEEE dash be ready for an epic job and remember it wouldn't finish at the dash, all other interconnecting parts need changing too
    3) for more leg room would be easier to get money from a loan shark to pay off your paint job and such, then just let them break your legs.
    4) i found footage of you at karaoke lol

    Digital dash FTW

Edit: Youre considering a full custom job anyway. Go hard or go home :D

Some of those clusters are really nice, but shame about the MPH instead of KMPH on them.

The basic idea was to use all the existing bolt holes and clips from the original dash and fabricate something up by using blue foam as a modelling agent to create a fibreglass mould on a new frame. All ideas at this stage and if I don't do it in the future, someone else should :)

PS: Slighty off topic, but am close to having bonnet struts available in kit form on Group Buy. Just need to sort out pressures and a better mounting solution :)

    Cheers
