Replacing shifter bushings - do I need a torque wrench?

The guide I'm reading tells me to tighten a couple of bolts to a specific torque measurement. I don't want to go and spend a bajillion dollars on a torque wrench. Do I need it?

Nah, just do them up properly. Be careful with the the ones that go through the yoke to the gearbox, if you do it up too tight the shift will be stiff and awful.

    You lost me at yoke.
I think I know which ones you mean - the two that bolt the shifter plate onto the....thing that comes out of the gearbox ;) But I'm not sure how tightening them will ruin the shift.
I think I'll keep an eye on it and have a play with it before I put the whole thing back together to make sure it's okay.

    Thanks, Chrispy.

Because if you do it up too tight it will make the movement between the yoke and the bottom of the shifter very stiff. Way too stiff.

just do it by feel. the bottom bolt does NOT need to be super tight else you can't shift smoothly.

use some thread locker (go get a tube at any auto store), tighten to your liking and it won't come loose by itself.

If you mean the long bolt that goes well underneath the shifter, right through the bushings...that one was pretty damn tight when I got here.

that's the one... everything else don't worry too much.

Okay. Well that's the one I left semi-tight last night. I'll have a crack tonight, tighten it a bit and do the two that mount the shifter down, and see how tight it is.
    Thanks :D
