Dont get me wrong, im not bragging about it, and the extent of my illegal mods are blow off valves and AIV removal which doesnt exaclty fall in to the category of dangerous modifications

My wife was taught to leave the car in gear when she learnt to drive. I hate that mentality cars have a park brake USE IT! especially if it's on the flat, what good does leaving it in gear do?. Ficking dangerous & senseless I am not looking forward to the crunch one day....
She argues it's so kids can't start it etc but they start just fine in first gear ( it is always left in first) arrrgh!! I'm all pissed off now....

OH well sad to hear the six year old got delt to because of an idiot driver.

  6. mrkarter77

    mrkarter77 No Really, They do!!!

they teach you that so if the park brake fails it has a backup, as park brakes commonly fail....

and turtle, the reason people have illegal mods on their car are for various reasons, such as more power, better handling, looks etc etc

some "illegal mods" are worse than others, i can think of a few legal mods that are more dangerous......

Thats a stupid thing to say Niall, that list has function, tell me the value of remote start other than showing off to your mates

Agreed... IMO, i dont see any great value in remote starting... waste of fuel and putting unnecessary exhaust fumes in the air etc for others to breath in... then you go into percentages of people who dont get in straight away, those who still stand and chat while is idling there - its the 'i better go" and they dont... attitude.

Haha, you're going to pay all the NA people out now that you bought a TT :p

And I have a turbo the size of your head in the shed ;)

function or not, if something is illegal, its illegal....yes remote start has no function (well not worth it) but the things listed are still illegal

your neighbours dog wont stop barking 24/7, you shoot it...problem solved/ for the better...still illegal

I have remote engine start on my Z, it is part of the alarm system. I barely use it, and the times I have, has been to scare people who are standing to close to it in parking lots etc...

I had to read half that news story before I realised it was a remoted full size, actual car. I was trying to work out how a little remote controlled car could do so much damage :rolleyes:

Wouldn't this have been easily solved if there was a gear position sensor?

If Gear /= Neutral, do not start.

Had I ever decide to fit one of these, thats the first aspect i'd make sure worked before moving on. Then theres also the fact that if you own a turbo timer... cant put it in gear then walk away anyway.

If the guy's 300 was NA then I completely agree, 100% lame, but had it been Turbo, then I might understand. I honestly would mind this, i've woken up late many-a-times for work at 5am, last 5 mins frantically running around the house getting my stuff together, could just run by my window, turn the Zed on and keep on running while she warmed up. Obviously no chance of being in gear, see above statement. /shrug

I smell something fishy about this story... :(

Hey mate, i'm not sure there are such things as gear sensors.. Or at least, I don't think they're very common, my mate bought a top end Viper alarm which had remote start as a feature, and everything was all fine until one day his housemate moved the car and left in in gear.

Long story short, his housemate is now paying my mate for his front bar.
I think an "in gear" sensor could be hacked together and work, but i'm not sure of them being standard with these remote starts..

I know the thinking behind it and it is so badly flawed I shouldn't even call it thinking.
In the last fifteen years or so I have seen maybe three or four park brakes that didn't work - all of them simply out of adjustment. Not once in this whole time have I seen a failed park brake, in fact never in my life have I seen one ever.

On the other hand I could easily rattle off about a dozen cases I have seen with my own eyes of cars being started in gear nearly leading to an accident.

The old park brake failed myth, how many people have forgotten to put it on or didn't put it on correctly then said on the following insurance claim "park brake failed"

Lack of driver education at its worse, if the driver really knew what was going on there wouldn't be an issue.

But anyway off topic n all that ... bleat over sorry if anyone takes offence non intended :)

No need to be like that Stu

if you think it has no function then thats you opinion, but that wasnt what you posted, you made the point that its illegal, and i made the point that many common modifications are also illegal and all for a reason.

And the function of a remote start is to warm up a car before you get into is or if you leave your AC on you can cool the car down before you get in. I think thats a valid purpose, a remote start installed ona automatic car with a working neutral start switch is not dangerous in any way.

im more wondering why most people use their "PARK" as thier park brake alone.
every car by law still must have a working parking brake that can bring the car stopped with the rear wheels in case of also the brakes failing.
you'll probly find that most people that fail to put the park brake on are auto drivers, and most insurance claims are because thier didn't put it in park properly, and with out a brake applied.
and the little bolts on the park in the gear boxes arn't always designed very strong(like a small 8 mm bolt just to hold the car's wieght)
i believe that its (remote start) an ok mod ,but like most modifications , if its not done properly its illegal. and doing it properly would be a simple sensor on the gear postion that a basic person could install under instruction.
i think the mod can have its merit if done properly. eg lack of engine wear, colder car, and even just a quicker take off, and even safer in say a person being followed to thier car in the carpark etc.
just an opinion not a should be done, your free to say your opinion.

Far as I knew, yea, there are no standard / bolt on gear sensors available. I was thinking something you can fabricate up, a contact or something. Gear selected, contact is active and flowing a few volts, goes to a simple circuit, and disables remote start control box. Eliminates just about every conceivable situation where the car could be started while in gear since thats where the sole problem lies.

If I do install one, i'll sit down and draw out an easy straight forward circuit. Right now its more just brain storming. After all, automatics have the same damn system! Anything other then Park or Neutral and the car wont start, how much harder can it be to implement something that does the same thing in a manual car?

Dont worry you arent the only one lol. The title should have said "remote start" instead. I saw the title and lol'd thinking it was going to be something funny.

I hit a six year old with a 1/10th scale elec RC car and it pulled his feet out from under him & damn near broke his ankles (my bad - my very bad)

I felt soooo fricken stink, the little fella was just playing around & got in the wrong place at the wrong time, 1.5kgs at around 50kph straight into his feet
His legs just blew out from under him & he fell flat on his face, good news is he was ok just some bruising & I gave him a drive of the RC car - he seemed happy as after that. Lucky he was a tough little guy :)

Your 300zx is a step ahead of you. All 300zx's have a neutral switch standard. If it doesn't work (in my case) its because its been cut or not put back on.

So all you need to do is get the signal from that to figure out if the car is in neutral or not.

If you have Datascan and a Conzult cable, you'll know what I'm talking about as the diagnostics tell you whether its in neutral or not (in the same way they show you if the aircon is on or if power steering is doing anything).
