hey guys, i have just purchased a 89 tt 2+2 zed and i have driven it home and hasnt been driven since... i jumped in it tonight, warmed it up then went for a drive... i got about 1km out of it then she started to struggle and revs died... before it died the car started jaulting and i looked at the speeo and my speed needle was bouncing all over the place... i had to push it home  now when i try to start it theres just a ticking noise and it wont fire up.... could this be the alternator not giving the car charge??? PLEASE someone help me, it is my first Zed and im pretty shattered.... Cheers Pete
sorry that i cannot help .. but perhaps a cost of living in the coldest city in australia and only 56 miles from the golden gateway to the wimmera and the western district .. a good place to come from ..( and never return ..!!)
Your PTU is most likely dead! Have you done any maintenance, or has anyone since you brought it, your problems could be as simple as dirty connectors. try and start the car to test the alternator output across the battery terminals, should be between 13-14v.
Start with simple things >>> Install a known good battery. Clean battery terminals. Check ALT is charging. Clean all connectors in e/bay.... use SEARCH for details Run diagnostics - see Tech A-Z. Listen for f/pump priming @ IGN on... ... that should get you started
cheers guys, im going to buy new batterey then will be entirely going over the engine bay today... it is going to a bloke here in ballarat on monday who is a 300zx specialist.. i will see what he comes up with and hopefully all will be ok... Thanx Pete
B-B .. do you know that there is another zedder in ballarat (sallsz ..??) .. she may be able to assist in some way...???
no actually i didnt... thanx mate, i will throw her a pm and see if she may know something about my problem...
Sounds like alternator not PTU. When you get the new battery put a multimeter on it and check if it's getting a charge from the alternator... should be about 13.8 volts if your alternator is working.
reply it makes me think its not the alternator.... the battery in the car was dead all day sunday, couldnt even turn lights on... but i got home from work monday and fired perfectly yet it only lasted another 20-30 secconds... this problem has me puzzled big time...
