I am 99% sure my rear main seal is leaking. Has anyone replaced theirs with the engine in and just dropped the gearbox? Is this possible or does the engine have to come out?
    Thanks Guys

You just need to drop the gearbox and thats it... I dont know why people need to remove the motor also... I read on another forum they had to remove the motor and gearbox on a holden to replace it as it was siliconed in or something... I pissed myself laughing as that is a joke saw that guy coming for sure...

Very easy job to do. Once you remove the transmission and the flywheel/flexplate, take off the rear main seal carrier from the block and then change the seal out on your work bench.

Once the box is out this is easy Rich.

But have a good look first and clean up around the box and up the sides.

I have replaced mine twice on the NA. There is a leak again now. But having a good look I can see the actual source is the soleniods up on the heads. Its running down the side of the engine. Very slow. But drips in the exact same spot as the Rear main does.

Yep, it's an engine out job on the old pre-VL Commodore

six cylinders. Different type of seal. You have to remove the rear main bearing cap and to do that you have to remove the sump. To remove the sump it's engine out time as the cross-member is in the way.

Not ona VS you dont... and not on a V8 anyways... And if you are smart enough you can unbolt the cross member and do it that way... Done it before on a VK 202... But you are right on older commodores tho... Its good when you got a hoist too hehe :D

Thanks guys I will have to have a real good look at this and make sure it's not coming out of the heads just to be sure. I am glad it's only the gearbox out because I really don't want to pull the engine ever again.
    Cheers
