Whenever it rains(even very light drizzle)I develop a miss which gradually gets worse and then stalls. About a year ago i replaced and relocated the PTU(now a series 2 with the nissan conversion loom) to the nose cone area(next to the afm).

It only ever happens when it's raining. I tried to duplicate the problem in dry weather using a garden hose directly on the ptu plugs, but it didnt miss a beat.

Also moved the PTU again to behind the passenger headlight, but the problem persists.

Sprayed the crap out of all connectors with WD40, but dosent seem to help. Connectors all clean and covered in contact grease. Coil pack connectors have been replaced.

If i leave it for a while it seems to dry out and fire up again, only to start missing and stall again eventually in the rain.

The PTU itself is definately not at fault as I've swapped it over with another series 2 and get the same issue.

I might be barking up the wrong tree with the ptu connections and it could be shorting somewhere else. Any ideas on which components or earthing points may be susceptible to water/high humidity? Any ideas on how to diagnose an intermittant short in the loom(I've tried moving various parts of the ptu loom while the car is running in the dry but it wont miss). If i took it to an autoelectrician, how would they go about trouble shooting it?

    cheers guys and thanks
    Nick

Pod filter under nose cone, and although there is a front splash guard

, its in pretty crappy shape(not sitting properly in front bar as the guard has a few cracks and holes)

yeah i think i need to put some splash gaurds in but as my front bar is cracked and looks like a peice of crap at the moment i don't think it is worth it as i see them falling straight off and smashing into 1 million peices. also i want to replace my pod with an oil type instead of the dry type i have as i am sure water may be getting in and buggering around with the MAF.

Pod filter was on the car when i got it, but the shape looks like a K&N

although it has no labels(I've seen cheapo ones at autobarn for about $50). The MAS connectors and clean and didnt make a difference when i spray WD40 all over the place.

It's drizzling now so i started it up and let it idle for about 20 mins. It started up OK but after a few mins was missing all over the place but didnt stall. I'm sure if i took it for a drive it would have died.

I'm wondering if humidity thrown around by the fan onto some connectors or loom is causing the problem?

You need to replace your filter

    Or move it.
Its simply water hitting the heating wire of your MAS.
It uses a heating wire to measure the airflow. Mist is getting onto it and cooling it and throwing the signal all over the place. Occured commonly with those who relocated their pods to under the lights.

Pod has been there for years without this issue and it hasn't been

    touched.
When its dying it sounds like cylinders are dropping out one by one and lots of unburn't fuel from the tail pipes until it wont run any more.(I can hear misses from both sides of exaust)

Are you sure water's not getting into the ptu plugs?

The plugs themselves are dry and throwing water

on them didn't make a difference(nor did spraying them with WD40). I can't see water anywhere near the ptu(behind passenger headlight). I won't rule out water getting into some other part of the loom though.

    Zisluv is is right

Is the splash guard on, the one that sits just infrount off the pod, water will enter if thats not there, and sometimes when it is.

Besides, shouldnt that be the case for all zeds with pod filters?

No, if the pod is correctly placed, the bottom

off it should sit just above the bottom off the splash guard, shielding it from any spray that enters, if its lower its gunna suck in moisture, thats when the maf throughs in the towel.

have you also tried this around the bonnet rather than just on the ptu itself?

will the engine run if MAS is disconnected?

I ask as its a simple test to rule out MAS as the culprit.

only the PTU and the loom. Might have to wait for a dry day to

    test if all else fails

    Trust me :)

Get an oiled one, go for a run in the rain. Or perhaps put a makeshift cardboard screen around your current one. Its water hitting the hot wire.
