Driving home tonight heard a pressured popping noise followed by gushing water. Investigation showed the top of my radiator split open (plastic section) NRMA guy reckons it happens a fair bit...now I need a new one - or can the plastic be welded??? Anyone know where there might be a spare radiator top tank part (if it can be bought seperate) ??
Hi Veronice, the same thing happened to me.. The top tank had a tiny split that kept draining out water. As a temp fix I used raditor crack cement. You can get it from any auto sop. It's got a metal compound in it and you roll it like clay and use it to fill the hole. THIS IS ONLY A TEMP FIX.I got mine fixed at Dash Sport. They are at 14 Ocean Street, Narrabeen. Speak to Daren on 0415 984 987. Only cost me $260 (inc. new top tank, coolant, cap, clamp, radiator rodding). You have to let him know in advance so he could order the top tank. And it only took about 3-4 hrs to pick up my car.If it's a nice day you can go across the road to the beach. After you pick it up, just keep an eye on the temp gauge and make sure the water level is good for a few days to make sure. I hope that helps. To this day I havent had any probs with the radiator :YD If you have any questions just drop me an email or a call. Cheers.
Just get a new top tank....>> Dinesh's prices sound fairly normal, so you should expect to pay about the same. It's only ever the top tank that splits because it gets the thermal shock when the thermostat opens.
Happened about 1 year ago. 40+ degree day... came out to go to cricket. Started the car and switched the air con on, and next thing I know the engine temp started going up after a while. Thaks god I didnt leave the garage!!! And alas, the top tank had split.
If you have the extra cash... I'd invest in a new radiator like I have. These cars are getting quite old and with the underbonnet temperatures of the TT combined with PLASTIC radiator end tanks... you never know when the other are going to go. Especially when our cars are now 8 - 15 years old...John :-Z
