Not knowing much about them, i spose it is meant to stay somewhere between rich and lean, what do you do if it goes high on either side??

well best to do search for full details,

but basically there are two types of sensors; narrow band and wide band.

narrow band: basically just tells you rich or lean. this is what the stock o2 sensors are. if rich, ecu corrects but overshoots to lean, then back again. so it keeps switching back and forth. these are no use for tuning purposes, and and guage that uses them will only really tell you if the sensor works or doesn't.

wideband: will tell you actually air/fuel ratio. this is what you can use for tuning. if too lean, then you will get predetonation, which is nasty for the engine! this must be avoided. if too rich, will not get optimum power, and will use a lot of fuel, as well as maybe damage cats (not 100% sure on this).
