Four Zeds were at the Sat. Arvo sprints at QR today, in with about 50 other cars ranging from early Alfa's, to the latest Maza RX8, with Skyline GTR's, Beemers, a Porsche GT2, and a Toyota MR2, 180SX, early escorts and a Capri, to name but a few.

A really great bunch of guys turned out and it was really well run. It was the first time I had been on a Sat.

    The Zeds were a Z32 Coupe, a Z32 2+2, a Z31 and a Z32.

    YEAH

only from me Pete, but not good ones I am afraid. Did a flat 63 on the Sprint track. Under the circumstances it was pretty good because I was trying out new EBC Red pads instead of my Yellow.

Wrong decision. The reds take forever to warm up and bed in. They are really, really hard. Bad for the rotors I reckon. IMO they are only good for Le Mans etc., which I will never get to. I will go back to my yellows that are brilliant.

Also blew a turbo seal. Will now be fitting the upgraded turbos I have had standing by for such an occasion.

BUT the real reason, is that I have not mastered the Sprint track yet. I have not perfected the right line through the two "esses", and selecting the correct gear in and out. The rest of the track is OK. Can't blame the car mate!

If I can do the Clubman track in 65, I should do better than 63 on the Sprint track. And the Clubman was done without full boost being held.

The Red Baron goes into the first corner off the straight at over 200kph, so the handling is good.

Just needs a "check up from the neck up" for the driver.

    good times>>

63 is a pretty good time my best is a 62.8 in my NA in semi slicks. thru the esses i use 2nd. JT used to use 3rd in the esses and 4th for main straight and turns 1 and 2 the rest in 3rd.
im hoping do shave another second off my best time once i get a few things done and new monster NA motor

Im surprised you found the EBC reds hard

I found them to be very soft, completely wore out a set in one track day at QR. After that I switched to the yellows whick worked better. The reds are supposed to be good for WRX's but I think the Zed is a bit too heavy for them.

    That's amazing JT

that you found them soft. I had my mechanic drive the Zed for a while and he found the same thing, hard as nails. Interesting, maybe the quality control at EBC is not consistent??????;)

    Third gear

is shaping up to be the best option at this stage for the esses I think AZA. I guess JT knows that, and that's why his times are so good, as well as being a good driver.

My Zed finally held boost and the tuning was spot on for a change so I came out of the last ess corner into the main straight in third, then 4th, and then had to select 5th before braking slightly for the first RH off the straight. Surprised me totally, 5th??, where the hell is that?????

    Hey JT.....................

.......maybe we are not comparing apples with apples. I could be finding them harder and colder because of the larger 360mm Brembo style rotors and 6 piston calipers, using Porsche GT3 pads on my Zed.

The yellows I have been using just do not show any signs of wear at all yet.

That would make the difference I guess???????????

OR just maybe I am not going as fast as I could???????

Paul which track is the sprint track??

I know the clubman one is turn 3 coming back on itself and then the double left to the short shoot before the main str8.

Is the sprint track where you basically turn left after 3 down the back short shoot??

Did I tell you about the time I took a Zed off the end of the main str8 at 220!!!!! with no brakes LOL

I used the reds with the stock 280mm discs

then yellows with 280mm discs and finally yellows with the 332mm stoptec discs and stoptec calipers (they run a Porsche pad). I was getting the reds with the stock discs up to 700c+ so decided it was time to upgrade. The reds lasted me about 20 laps of QR and were on the backing plates by then. Even after 1 1/2 cool down laps they were pluming smoke big time when I came into the pits. Regardless the Yellows are a harder pad than the Reds according to the EBC website and are designed to work higher in the heat range.

The Redstuff isnt really a track pad, its just not up to it on a heavy car like the Zed.

    Taken from the EBC website:

    COMPOUND SELECTION
Green pads should be used for all standard street vehicles.
Red pads should be used on muscle cars, faster and heavier BMW models.
Yellowstuff grade should be used for track days.

    The Track Maps

have been sent to your email John.

Now you can tell us about your run off the straight in a Zed at 220kph. I am damned glad I was not with you.
