mate of mine has a leak on his power steering rack, he has put a full bebuild kit in it and it still leaks, has taken it to a shop and been quoted 600$ to rebuild it and have it all machined properly is this about right or does anyone know where to get a reco one from ?
Sounds like what happened to me with another car. They will probably clean out the PS fluid and put ATF in it.
I had a chronic steering rack leak when I was trying to register my car. I changed the steering rack boots and then, out of desperation as i only had a short amount of time, pored a bottle of "power steering stop leak" into it, which actually helped strangely enough. Also zeds are supposed to use automatic transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid, which is a heavier weight? Correct me if im wrong but it could be that the car has had power steering fluid put into it and is leaking through the seals as its too thin.
If the cylinder bore is damaged at the least it would require honing or possibly machining. In addition oversize seals may be required. Have you priced a new one from Nissan? There is also the option of getting one from Coz, or perhaps purchasing a used unit off the forum.
I had a leaky rack and had it rebuilt for $260 . Perfect job and no leaks . But I guess the worse condition and possibly more work will cost more .
You mentioned he put a rebuild kit in it ? Was that done recently? Can you see where the leak is coming from? I had to sort out a power steering fluid leak from a friend on an NA very recently lol, turned out that the washers were not installed correctly on the connecting hard lines. Something that little caused a massive headache.
Power steering and auto gearbox fluid is the same thing. Dexron 3 is what you want. Often it's just easier to buy a second hand one that is known to be good.
