Ok So i've gone to get my rocker covers/cam covers powder coated only to be told they wont do them because they are worried about debris being caught up inside what seems to be a baffle of some sort sorry no pics, hoping someone is familiar with what i'm talking about. Can these baffles be removed or drilled off they are only on the intake covers, are they important? what do they do? they have two little nozels in them also, can they be left off?

    Cheers,

    Steve

I had some cam covers powder coated, and wanted to use the Copper hammertone ones,
but they looked lost under the white plenum, so red it is.
Looks like The Brat will be getting the hammertone ones under a polished plenum, but thats another story.

All I did was give them a through triple wash with a degrease and pressure washer.
The plastic bits inside will get soft in the oven so make sure they DON"T sit them on a flat surface to bake.
I think the powdercoates can be careful and not spray the powder on the inside, but if any does get in then it will bake on to the metal and stay there.
I think the secret is clean.. clean... and more clean.

Did you polish those pipes while they were on the covers, or do they pull out?

The chrome inlet/outlet pipes just pull out with a bit of wiggling and twisting.
They are not welded or rivited, just a press fit.
The powder coaters can plug the holes with a silastic type plug that does not melt during the baking to stop the sandblasting powder getting in.

Yeah polished them on the covers

They just pull out and got them chromed about $30 for the two sets of cam covers.

They are referring to the sand getting caught in the baffles when they sand blast them first, so you could either prep them yourself or get them soda blasted as that wont leave behind anything you cant easily wash out.

I went through this with a less careful bunch when i had mine done, they didnt tell me and i took them home and noticed gobs of sand up inside the baffles. Had to drill them out

My powdercoaters refused to do the cam covers because there is rubber on the underside. Their oven was too hot and would cause the rubber to melt out and cause a mess. Same reason they would'nt do assembled brake calipers.

One solutions I saw was to remove all the crap on the underside and replace it with steel wool as the breather baffle. Since then ive also learned its possible to find a lower temp powdercoater that wouldnt melt the rubber.

Great info, thanks Graham. Got a set of cleaned up covers on a shelf in my garage, can't wait to get them coated.

thanks Graham, i have already removed them its the plates that are on the inside of the inlet covers that i'm referring too, there is two little rubber drip things in one and two plastic L shaped things in the other one, I would like to just drill and remove the whole plate section but not sure of the consequences without knowing why it is there...

They're there to block as much oil as possible from shooting up from the cams out the vent holes

There is a writeup somewhere (tt.net maybe) that shows how to drill out the internal covers, remove the rubber, replace it with steel wool and rivit the internal covers back in place.

They'll look good under the polished plenum on the wifes car.

Thanks MoulaZX. They do look better in person with the sun on them. :D
