Hi all , was hoping that someone could advise me on what make / model numbers I require for my 90 tt 2+2 manual . Car runs fine and has pod , exhaust , boost jets . For my peice of mind I want to do a full lubricant service and change plugs and fuel filter . Did some searches but most of the posts seem to be arguments/discussions about what is best platinum/iridium etc . My car runs fine now and has no oil leaks , gear changes fine and limited slip works well . I dont want to compromise oil leaks or slip diff operation or gear change by poor oil choice and was probably thinking platinum plugs .If someone could help with constructive advice or part numbers I would be greatful

I would go with standard or high temp type plugs the only difference for your car being mostly stock will be the price and changing frequency if you go to platinum or iridium. They are a benefit in cars running high boost etc as the electrode ends are made of a stronger material so resist meltdown more so than standard plugs. As to oil and filters mate its personal choice, I use an aftermarket type high capacity filter and use Motul competiton 300v Engine oil. At around $90 for 4 litres of oil and $55 a filter it gets expensive pretty quick add to that platinum plugs or iridum for around $30 a peice and yes it gets expensive to use these in a near standard car. The cost will outweigh any benefits that might be seen except that you will get longer intervals between plug changes but the gaps will have to be checked every 5 - 10 thousand klms.

    $55 for an oil filter .. holy schisen ..!!!! .. i use a

recommended ryco z145a filter and change it every 5000kms along with conoco gold seal engine oil - 15/40, i think, ( around $30 for 5 litres ) as recommended by gavin woods, a zed specialist here on the gold coast ...

Hi Black Baz Yes mate 50 - 55 dollars at the moment for my Nismo or permacool high efficiency filters which flow around 37% more than conventional paper element filters and for racing etc I use a Filtermag system which COME racing in Victoria provide these filters as the name suggests have a magnet in them which helps trap small particles in the filter which is even better for protecting sensitive turbo bearings/bushes and seals and also prevent sludge from forming in the oil lines. (high efficiency filter) These bad boys retail at around $136 a filter depending on who you ask.

Have heard some good things about Conoco oils but dont know much about them. The Motul 300v competition has a very high heat tolerance essential to any zeds continued operation the oil doesnt start to become innefective until dangerously high temperatures are reached. The sonoco oil is pretty cheap so maybe its not a full synthetic ester oil?

I do use expensive oil and filters in my car as I can see the benefits of using advanced technology to help protect my expensive engine at the same time helping to make it more reliable. My car however is not a daily driver and costs would certainly spiral out of control if using these types of products for a daily driver.

NGK PFR6A-11 came out of my car. I think Caz1 can supply Iridium or Platinum at a decent price. Try sending her a PM.

I don't trust aftermarket oil filters - bought two Repco

ones for my Commodore and the non return valves didn't work!!?? I buy my oil filters from Nissan - bought three the other day cost $22 for the three of them i.e. bit under $8 each. Cheerz.

If you want the best possible oil filter ...>>

You have a choice of three; Amsoil, Mobil1 or K&N. These three have synthetic filter medium which can collect significantly more gunk than paper type, filter out smaller particles and are less restrictive.

The biggest problem with some of the cheaper filters is that the bypass valves open to easily which allows the oil to bypass the filter medium long before a filter change is due.

    Bought Some Gear

Well I went into my local Supercheap and have bought some gear . I ended up with Shell Helix Plus 15-50w fully synthetic oil , and a Valvoline V04 filter . I will be doing oil/filter changes at around the 3-4000km mark so thought I would give this a go to start with .I then decided to pull a plug out of my car and found I have NGK PFR6B11 (platinum I think) so have ordered another set of these . Did not measure existing gap but to the eye it looked well over 1mm ?? will gap my new plugs when they arrive . Any thoughts on gap size , nameplete under bonnet says 1.05mm should I stick with this or go smaller say around 0.9mm . Thanks

Hmm. That's a new one on me. I didn't think that oil

filters had by-pass valves? A lot have non-return valves so that oil doesn't drain from the filter back into the sump. But all the cars that I have worked on have the by-pass valve in the engine itself usually around where the filter is attached. But hey, I am just a "backyard" boy.
