Plenum pull, actually quite fun (long)

I started doing a boost leak test yesterday with the tester I got from Caz on the Silver TT. Couldn't get it past 2 psi as the left side intercooler hose had a big hole in it. After 2 hours of running around to all local shops, I got a perfct fit 45 degree angle 50mm hose from Quickfit Mufflers in Asquith out of the junk box for free. ( I spent all my money at All-Z-Parts next door)

Put the new hose on and tried again. This time leaks from the rear of the plenum.

Hmm, all those hoses there look pretty bad. Signs of coolant leaks and corrosion. This is not going to laste very long.

This car is a project and needs an engineers certificate to be registered. Never been registered in Oz, just complied in Qld, but that does not count in NSW as it was brought in under the 15 year rule. Part of the engineers cert. is an emissions test, and there is a 6 weeks waiting list.

So I might as well do a bit of home improvements while I'm waiting.

This morning I got stuck into it and started to pull it apart.

I've pulled one of these engines apart before, but I still wonder, what were the Nissan engineers thinking ? (and how could they actually make it work ?) Why are there hoses running randomly in all directions ? Why is there no space to get your hands and tools in there ?

Anyways, I'm happy to report, I got the plenum off in about 6 hours. No blood (must be a first) only dropped 2 screws. Engine bay is now littered with masking tape tags that hopefully corresponding to tags on the plenum.

The injector connectors were absolutely horrible. Full of green corrosion. How could they possible have worked ? I tried to take some pictures, but they don't really show how bad it was. Injectors had obviously never been disonnected before as all connectors were unbroken.

Next weekend will be dedicated to changing hoses and changing connectors. I had already changed a few vacuum hoses for blue silicon ones, but I found there are a lot more.

For all the custom hoses, is Coz still the best source, or is there a better/cheaper source close by ?

Another question that arises. I need to do an emissions test. Can I bypass any of those useless doovers at the back, or should I leave that until after the test ?

    fun isnt it :)

Coz is good if you are going to get a bunch of parts but if you are only going to get 1 or 2 hoses then local nissan is ok.

what exactly do you mean by the "useless doovers at the back"?

Caz can get most of these hoses at good prices!

Bypass the water hoses theEGR, PVRV and AIV should stay in place till after the test. I would debate that after 15+years they probably do little. Make sure your det sensor is working so you running on normal fuel maps for the test. Check for correct ignition timing also.

Would you not call the EGR, PVRV and AIV 'useless doovers' ?

I guess I'd better not disconnect anything just in case.

There is a bunch of hoses and other bits on the way from Caz.
