can anyone tell me how the safety boost works, ie is is entirely controlled by the ecu or is there a solenoid etc.
    thanks.

    safety boost

yes its controlled by the ECU.it can enter safety for any number of reasons, most commonly here its either detonation or failure of the sensor.if you in safety mode best put the ECU into diganostics mode.best info on this can be found in the service manual. avalible online , i belive its listed in links. or do a search on this forum . there plenty of people that have posted info about this in the past.

    Ecu controlls the solenoid...

to enter safety boost. If there is detonation, or the sensor fails then the ECU retards timing and simultaneously reduces boost pressure through the solenoid. Yours cant reduce boost pressure in this way as the solenoids are unattached.
As I said I dont think your problem is safety boost.

    Have a read of this........>>

From the FAQ, "What is Safety Boost". It doesn't mention in the article that a faulty Temp sensor can fool the ECU into thinking it is cold and dropping the car into safety boost.
