    Hey fellas,

Long time absent. I got a noob question for y'all.

I'm putting my engine back together after pulling it down completely about 9 months ago, I was cleaning up the carbon deposits in some of the pistons and snapped a ring, can I get these singularly, or do I need to buy a set, also, will any 88mm ring do, or are they specific to the VG30dett.

Trying to weigh up whether I rebuild this bottom end, or buy a 2nd hand one from somebody.

Just wan to get this thing on the road again, I've got the zed itch again.

Feels great to be getting my hands dirty again.

    Cheers boys,

    Gazza

if you're that deep into the engine you'd be crazy not to get it freshened up with new rings and bearings before you put it all back in

It's all money mate, we're on the bones at the moment with the new baby. We're moving soon also, so I want to just get it back together ASAP incase anything goes missing in the move.

I'm planning to just get this together, then pick up something to build slowly, make a monster of it.

Call me crazy, but it's fun.

Complete set of new OEM rings are $100 from coz. Definitely do not put it back together without a hone and new rings.

What was the point of pulling it apart... To clean the pistons?

    ^^This exactly.
You've basically committed yourself to at least a hone to get it back into some sort of shape where it can be re-assembled. Point of no return has been crossed.

For cheap and nasty you could get your hands on a bottle-brush hone and have a go at it, but even then you'd need to invest in / borrow a set of bore gauges to keep track of the bores. If I remember right, the service manual has specs for overhaul of the main bearings, they come in different sized from the factory, and rebuilds require you to purchase the right size main bearings for your engine. The specs of themains are stamped into the #1 crank counterweight. #5 crank counterweight has the bearing grades for the conrod bearings.

If it were me, I'd drop another engine in to get it mobile, then do the rest as cashflow permits.

Cheers for the advice boys, will look at getting an assembled bottom end then, I pulled it apart as I had planned on going all out on it, life got in the way though.

Ain't it always the way aye... :(

Shame you're in Perth, would have been happy to come around a lend a hand whenever I had some spare time to it back to mobile asap.

I have just refreshed my stock TT motor and purchased a full gasket set, King bearings (mains and big ends and a set of Eve (jap) rings off Ebay for US$110 which is for peanuts and equates to R1200 South African Rand dellivered, Nissan South Africa charge ZAR3000 for rings alone.
Buy your self a refresh kit and bore honer, you wont be sorry.
