Exactly, some ppl are just nuts and expect awesome mileage from a turbocharged V6. Who are they kidding? And like you said, the difference would be so neglible in the first place why bother... It's simple, OD is 4th gear so use it as such. I cant believe this went for 4 pages when the first answer from bigbaz was correct to begin with! lol

Ok then if this is all true, which i dont care if it is or not, and your comlaining about ppl thinking fuel saving is neglible which it probably is i dout i would ssave much as i mainly do city driving, but with all of this would could possibably be bothered to turn it on and off ever single time u go over 80 ks. I dont see any benefit having to turn it on and off, it would useless effort to have to remember to turn the bloddy thing on when u hit 80 ks.

You may be techqinually right but if the benefit is neglible either way why would u bother to manually use it??? Thats all im saying about it. I am aggreeing that fuel saving is neglible but it isnt worth the effort to maunally turn the od on and off to save the gearbox which i highly dout would suffer any kind of damage for this.

I guess if you're super lazy sure, you'd be screwed in a manual then! lol Fancy having to shift gears to go faster! Geez, screw that! :p Some people are just lazy, I understand that and for those people it's probably half the reason for buying an automatic in the first place. But really how much effort is it to flick a button? I mean c'mon!

*yawn.... you talk about putting extra stress on ur box when its on under 80 yet when your doing 70km/h with it off your putting an extra 1500rpm on the box..

Gotta agree with 300ZXT... this was all answered by BigBaz way back in this thread. Loud and proud not sure what sort of rear axle ratio you're running. There certainly isn't 1500rpm difference at 70km/hr between OD on and OD off.

What the mechanics are talking about is straining the torque convertor. I think of it a bit like lugging an engine with a manual transmission. An engine under load like this does sound different... true, true. But why trundle around in sports car, lugging the engine and low down in the rev range getting no true power...

It's about time to close this thread :)

I cant beleive this thread is still going, if we are talking about saving fuel, sitting on 75km/h with the gearbox swithcing between 3rd and 4th constantly will not save you fuel

I really don't see the problem. Leave it in OD and the car being an auto (Its called Auto for a reason....ie it AUTOMATICALLY selects correct gearing for conditions) will take care of the rest....it won't lock into 4th at 20km/h will it? It will simply select the correct gearing for the conditions (load, throttle position) at hand.

The guys at Yarra Valley Automatics who have rebuilt boxes for a few guys here say the same thing. Under 80 leave the OD off to prevent excessive wear/heat. I think they probably know a little bit more about autos then some of the guys in this discussion so I would go with their recomendation.
