Now, my Uncle and I were just checking out the Z. I was showing him my leaking injector (it's a z31). In the process of finding a solution, he told me that my timing was off in the engine. So he went about fixing it by twisting the distributor. I have no idea about engines, so I don't know if this is the appropriate method etc. The engine ran alot smoother after though. Anyway, we did that then cleaned the gunk away from the injector. We couldn't fix them, coz we couldnt find where the leak was coming from etc.

Anyway, my question is, after i left his place, when i high rev i.e. over 4k, it makes a weird tapping sound? Very faint, but still clearly audible, especially loud when holding it flat..Now, is this because of the timing difference, or because we cleaned the gunk away and fuel is flowing more freely out of my injector! ?

I know i should just throw it away, anyway, no smart-asses please, i just need some help. Cheers.

    Josh.

he has probably advanced the timing too much. that noise you hear is likely to be pinging - which is bad for your engine.

yes turning the dizzy/cas is the way to set timing. but you can only do it when using a timing light. otherwise you are purely guessing. the timing HAS to be set exacty right to avoid pinging/detonation

im not sure bout z31s but my z32 it 15degrees BTDC.

it would be timing my freind , does it sound like pigning ?

if he adjusted your timing by just listening to the engine then its a pretty rough method even if it is better than what you had, you should get it done more accuratly .

    Cheers...Now another :)

Cheers guys. Thanks very much. It's alot better than before which shows how bad it was  i thought it was just the injector leak :bash:

Anyway, another question I have  can i do this myself? i saw how he did it, is using a timing light gunna be roughly the same work?? How much does one cost? Thanks again guys

also, if i end up not having a timing light, should i turn the dist. back a bit? for safety? or is it too touchy?

yeah as the guys said it seems he advanced the timing too much, it can cop the extra advance at idle but not at revs. very risky on a turbo'd engine

If you dont have access to a timing light, then just back the timing off untill the car stops pinging on the road, once you have found that spot. Back it of a bit more!!! just to be safe.

go out and buy a timing light. they're about $50 or so from supercheap. Basically it works by connecting to an ignition lead and then you point the light on the crank pulley. there are special lines on the pulley and the engine which allow u to see the timing. its hard to explain but once you shine the light on the pulley you'll know what i mean.

there is a topic in tech that tells you how to set timing in a z32 (not sure bout z31 - but its the same idea).

you could turn the timing back a little if you're worried. but only a tiny tiny tiny bit. you'll also lose power doing this due to retarded ignition. personally i would just get ahold of a timing light asap and fix it once and for all.

Thanks muchly guys. Don't have a spare $50 atm thanks to xmas (aint that the truth!) but I shall get onto that asap.

In the meantime, I shall turn it back a bit. I'm gunna go fiddle with it now, and I shall report back...

    Cheers. Josh.

just dont move it too much there mate, retard it too much and its not good either. very small movements at a time, like 1mm

really? 1mm? he was moving it like....lol, dunno, but heaps. more than that... anyway, I shall stick to your advice :)

I'm off now. back in 10

Guys, movin by a mm or 2 isnt doing anything... i went for a spin after movin it by like, 5-8mm and its NEAR EXACTLY the same
