oil pressure randomly drops to 0

very recently I have been experiencing a problem where the oil pressure drops to 0, when this happens, the car runs horribly, so its definitely not a faulty sender, I am guessing it is the oil pump, but just wandering what would cause the oil pump from going from running fine 4-6 pressure, to 0. Is it affected by voltage at all?

Thanks in advance for the info.

    Oil pump is entirely mechanical.

Checked your oil level lately? Could also be some crap in the sump covering up the pickup.

Either way incredibly bad!! Your motor will likely die soon if it keeps happening.

    that's what I thought

might be some crap in the sump, I recently put some cleaner through, might have dislodged some gunk.

It is quite random, seems to happen after sitting in traffic.

Oh no! Don't do that! I would expect that is what has happened...

Apparently the way to go is diesel oil rather than those cleaners. The diesel oil has a lot of detergents in them to clean it out gradually rather than strip everything out in one hit.

I also have a simular problem, but mine doesnt appear to effect in how the engine runs. If im crusing at around 2-2.5k rpm sometimes the oil pressure just drops off the gauge. if i clutch in and give it a quick rev it pops back up for a bit. Not thread-jacking, Just relating :p
    Good luck with a fix

What do you reckon Chrispy a couple of quick changes with diesel oil to get the dislodged shit out ?

any particular one you would recommend crispy?

will have to do an oil change soon, sucks because I just done one a few weeks ago.

oil and coolant never stays in my car long >.<

    and Valvoline vr-1 is expensive

your's is probably just a blocked sender =]

Cheaper oil more often IMHO, these cars get the oil filthy so quick.

Maybe... Worth a shot. At least NA engines are cheap.

Not a diesel cleaner, a diesel oil.

Too late for the diesel oil in your case. If it is dropping enough pressure to run rough, that means the hydraulic lifters are getting very airated. if they are getting airated, so is the rest of the engine.

The only choice for you, after confirming oil pressure is actually an issue by using an external master gauge, is to remove the front cross member and pull the sump. Clean all the gunk from the pick up and sump, then reassemble.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL IT IS FIXED, YOUR ENGINE WILL DIE VERY QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On wed's night put through a full engine flush, changed the oil (Castrol RX) and filter (Ryco 145a) also using some Lucas oil additive.

Car running well has not missed a beat, pressure still drops to 0 on the gauge, but more stable, car has been running smooth and performing perfect. going to do another oil/filter change in 2 weeks time.'

Also going to be ordering and installing an oil cooler and oil thermostat(thx chrispy for the advice on the oil thermostat) as soon as I can afford it to help promote oil pressure.

Oil cooler and thermostat will do nothing to help your problem. Save the money for when the engine pops.

pull the sump and fix it NOW. It always amazes me how engines get neglected for years and the current owner discovers the results later on.

You wouldnt believe the glue like crud I see covering everything in a lot of engines I pull apart.

I have seen black thick crud 5-6mm thick sitting on top of the cam saddles in some engines. Always amazed they still run. Oil changes are so cheap.
