Oil in passenger side turbo.

As you might have been following on a previous thread I asked the question about having too much oil in the sump could cause damage and affect turbos.

Last night we went down the path of pulling the engine out (oh what fun it was :)) What I have found is that the passenger side Turbo has oil pools in it and the right side turbo is dry.

My issue is that there is no movement in the shaft (left right or up and down) and the turbos spin freely - is this oil possibly a result of excess oil in the sump or are the seals gone (keeping mind there is no shaft play)..

    thanks

Could be caused by either. Draining the oil and refilling to the right level, then driving the vehicle would have ruled either way on oil over full, but hindsight is a wonderfull thing.

The turbos do not need excess movement for the seals to leak, they are very similar to a piston ring in contruction and operation. You can not tell if the compressor seal is leaking with out runnng the turbo.

The smartest option now is to rebuild the affected turbo (I would recommend doing both), fix whatever oil leaks etc you have while the engine is out and refit the engine to the car.

Regardless you dont want to put them back in after going thru an engine pull .
No matter how you look at it you are in the middle of an engine build so dont skimp . Of course money is always an issue :(
My car was NOT blowing any smoke and ran fine but due to my manual conversion the engine came out . Same issue oily turbs so off to get them rebuilt .
I sent mine to Eric at a2zed because I know I dont have to worry anymore . They will come back fresh as a daisy leaving me to go about my business . Plus he can help out with other stuff as thats what he does .
DO your hoses and seals where you can , new water pump and timing belt . Also get your injectors serviced . Minimal freshen up without rebuilding engine internals .
    Good luck :)
