I bit the bullet and started my 100k service this morning. As mentioned in a previous thread this is my first time doing this service, or anything close to something of this size. But after lots of researching (and helpful advice from forum members) I felt confident to give it a go and so far so good. Basically I've drained and removed the radiator, removed fan/fan clutch, taken off the 3 accessory belts, took S1 PTU out (S2 going back in) removed upper right timing cover, and lined up to about 10 degrees BTDC with the Crank Bolt... then I ran into my first problem. I am having a real hard time loosening the damn crank bolt. I have an auto, and I don't have access to an air wrench, so my only option is the belt wrap technique, but I am not sure that I fully understand it. Can someone help me out in explaining this step a bit more clearly? Thanks heaps, I appreciate any help
Take the top part of the timing belt off and wrap it around the water pump to stop it from rotating. I think
Take the starter off and jam a big fk off screwdriver in there. No hassles Or spend some of the money you saved on doing the 100K yourself and buy a little compressor and a rattle gun. I love mine
Get a long handled wrench and make sure it can contact the ground. Kick the motor over a bit and it should loosen (take out the fuel pump fuse) works good for the lazy Trev
The starter motor method is easier. You set up a long breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt with the other end on the garage floor (passenger side). Then you use the starter motor to turn the engine over (less than a second) and loosen the bolt. Alternatively, you can remove the inspection cover from the gearbox bell housing and use a screw driver or similar to lock the flex plate.
Huge cheater bar + lots of PB blaster would also help in case it wasn't obvious I broke mine by myself in under 5 minutes without a cheater bar - I'm a 5-speed though.
hi all, i'm looking at doing a full 200k service soon also. i'm pretty good with my hands so i'm relativly confident i can get this done with the right advice/tech articles. what do i need other then the 200k service kit from caz ? what tools will make doing the service easier and other things, jacks, ramps ect cheers
i did mine using the "jam the end of the breaker bar into the chassis member trick" whilst flicking the starter for a split second. Scared the crap out of me but worked fine
