Its a sad day as once again bureaucrats are dictating how we should live by introducing changes people dont want, and using dodgey facts to support their idea. I love how about 50% of fatal crashes are alchohol related, apparently this new law should magically fix it all up:rolleyes:

I am due to drive the zed out to Uluru in 3 weeks time, not sure I will go now as one of the big factors for going was the unlimited speed thing:(

If you read the whole article

quote: "Speed limits will be introduced in January. The demerit system will be introduced mid-way through 2007."

So you should be fine in 3 weeks:D

Time to plan the last trip to the NT now then!

I heard a while back that the cops still did you for going over 140 for dangerous driving. Not sure if its true but wouldn't put it past the cops.

It was subject to the opinion of the cop and it also depended on what car you were driving.

ie 200kph in a zed or Ferrari you could get away with, 160 in vw beetle (if they went that quick) you'd probably get done.

    speed limit

I think you will find that there is a speed limit on the road to Uluru once you turn off the main highway the last 200 odd k's

    NT Speed Limits Changed!!

    Hi Gazza,

DAMN! You don't think I'm upset by all of this.

Firstly the total lack of 'correct' research and the usual bogus reporting on how the N.T. is the most dangerous state and all of that crap. Lets not mention the 'local's not using seat belts, drunk driving, drug driving, overloaded vehicles, uneducated driving tourists (with hired unfamiliar 4X4 vehicles, just last week we had an idiot who rolled his hired 4X4 then made up a crazy story he had been attacked.) on dirt roads, I could go on and on as to the 'actual' causes for road deaths which again the Government is using this speed thing to justify the introduction of demerit points, most traffic fines are now doubled, extra Police, more red light cameras and even more speed cameras to capture the now restricted roads - have we got a HUGE revenue raiser here or am I just dreaming???

The Government has again proven it can bring in bogus and crap laws to suit itself and not investigating the root cause for these aparant problems. This reminds me of the firearm conviscation that occured a few years ago. Target the recorded/licenced individuals and take all of their guns away. Oh yeah forgot to mention - the criminals don't register their firearms, Ooops.

One intersting thing that was mentioned in the local Centralian Advocate paper on Friday 3rd November 2006, was now the International car manufacturers who perform their extreme high temperature and speed testing with their new model vehicles will stop. I love the response from the chief minister Clare Martin on this one, I quote Clare Martin, she said:

"She was more concerned with saving lives than pleasing these companies. We recognise that car companies have taken advantage of our roads. We have decided to end that"... Oh, I see what is important here. The perception that if the Government take away our responsabilities they can protect us - from what?

According to the paper (Centralian Advocate Friday 3-Nov-06) "the Opposition leader Jodeen Carney said she did not support the changes, but backed training programs for inexperienced drivers. Broad measures like introducing a speed limit on the Stuart Highway and demerit points for traffic offences fails to deal with the root causes of road fatalities in the Territory" she said.

Now this to me is more like it, don't you think?

I think back to the news reporting near the main holiday breaks (Easter, Christmas) and I note that the N.T. is always near the bottom of the list of road deaths. Doesn't that say something or not? Even though we 'had' open speed limits. There are many factors why people die on our roads and you guessed it, speeding is not always the main cause for it. But the Government thinks it is, along with their money making scheme to go with, and yep you and I pay for it, how fantastic:mad: .

WHERE was the public chance to inspect and reply to this nonsence, one week we had it and next we don't. Another knee-jerk reaction that is very unwelcome from my point of view.

    Very Mad Kaz

    Speed Limit to the rock

I forgot to mention in my previous post Gazza, there has been a speed limit from Erldunda to the rock for some time now, I believe it is 110 km/hr.

That was put in place because of all the interstate and international drivers who smashed their cars along there. Inexperience and probably tiredness, just some of my thoughts on the matter...

It is actually about 4.5 to 5hr trip from Alice Springs to Uluru, and not 30mins like all tourists think it is.

    Cheers, Kaz.

Its a complete joke, the amount of times the news has run the death toll lotto and the NT has ended with zero fatalities while other states are up in the twenties.
Talking to friends last night about getting done for speeding in the NT, they say the cops will get you for unsafe driving if your tyres arent rated for the speed they find you driving at if they pull you over.

Nothing like having governments so willing to protect us from ourselves, in the future we will live out our lives in retirement homes playing bingo (but only half an hour a day, dont want to get too excited!)

"Its a complete joke, the amount of times the news has run the death toll lotto and the NT has ended with zero fatalities while other states are up in the twenties." (Gazza)

    Hi there:) ,

Don't wan't to be a party pooper, but I should mention that the total population of NT is less than 1% of the Australian population in total, as opposed to NSW for example which is closer to 35% of the total population. This really should be taken into consideration. So if a death toll showed 35 deaths in NSW and 2 in NT, it could be argued that the NT death toll was twice as bad (on a per head basis).;) ;) ;)

On the other hand I agree that it is complete BS to just blame speeding as the main factor. What a coincidence that speeding fines happen to be such a massive revenue raiser:mad:

I am suprised...I mentioned this in a previous thread and got ripped into by all the "do-gooders"!!;) I do not condone dangerous driving, I just think the cops (or should I say the government ) seem to care more about raising revenue than keeping people safe. It just pisses me off when they pour so much time and effort into this stuff when there are clearly many other issues that get overlooked! And then they have the nerve to act all noble like they only care about saving lives... So why don't they spend more time dealing with theives or helping kids with drug problems??? Oh yeah, cos they can't FINE them, they can only put them through a system that COSTS money.

I'll stop ranting now...please don't bite my head off with all that "people who speed ARE the real criminals" crap:D
