mmmmm now back to the a/c and time to mess around.. love having the forum on a 50" plasma... mmm so sweet
I hope you guys left the spacers in there... It may need some longer studs then..... The problem of it coming off it because it's an NA box thus the starter had to be shimmed out.... Not much thread. Although it never was just 'finger tight' lol.
I had to take the crush washer off the bolt because it wouldn't engage the threads at all. And you're right, it wasn't 'finger tight', it was completely hanging out. I figure it came out because it didn't have enough engagement, then the stud side worked itself loose as the starter pivoted around it.
not having a dig Im not having a dig at anyone. But as a mechanic i always get a bit annoyed when these issues come up on a forum. I know these problems shouldnt happen in the first place and you guys have the right to say what ever you like . IT takes a long time to build a good reputation but it can be destroyed very easily.
CHECK THREAD DEPTH & GET ANOTHER BOLT The starter motor bolt goes into an alloy housing and it sounds like some of the top threads have been stripped out (of the housing). Take the bolt back out and measure with a probe as to how deep the thread goes and get a new bolt (allow for washer as well). Make sure it is not too long or it can foul the ring gear! Worst case would be drill out stripped thread and fit a helicoil.
I digress... ...this sort of stuff is par for the course with such a big job and wont destroy reputations. I always find it's how someone fixes a problem that counts. I'd happily give my Z to Tom to work on! :zlove:
For the record I have NO problems with Toms work and will easily go back to him without a worry in the world, i started this post not to make a fuss but to get a answer about what was wrong about something, see if it could be an easy fix, its what this forum is for, asking ppl for help if something is wrong, in this particular case it was an easy fix. I am def not here to cause problems or to destroy his rep as a buisness, as i thank him very much for what he has done thus far. To be honest Tom rang me this morning and I will be going back there this week for its first "checkup", like i said in my first post, professionalism as a person and a buisness is very good in my books. With such a massive job as it was, there will always be teething problems, by the sounds of it this was one of them.
Interesting... Thats nice Mikey, but I'm still blaming Tom...because I can... Nah, the main thing is you got it sorted...and you'll have to expect a few Gremlins with a big job like an engine swap. It's just a case of working through them one by one and fine tuning till it's the best it can be... Cheers Rob.
Toms done countless work on my z. The poor bloke has pulled my car apart a bunch of times. His work and after service support speaks for itself, its flawless.
i just love that the second you have turbos in your car and you heard a noise the poor turbos were blamed.. an NA motor has a starter motor aswell.. who says TTs cost more to maintain.. :bash: :bash:
LMFAOOOOOOOOO are you serious? hahahahahahahahaha. tt is far more costly to maintain, lol. was a good laugh though
whys that? my TT is far more expensive now, only out of choice, than my girlfriends NA.. otherwise all the general ongoing shite is the same.. same 100KK service, same center bearing rooted, same tyres, same oil/oil filter/air filter.. infact her heater core blew.. so technically hers would be more expensive on maintenance
my TT ran like a bucket of shit when i bought it, thanks to Minivan and Tom, who did a 100k service for me right at the start i have had only minor, albeit annoying problems because of the tyranny of distance, basically all the money i have spent on the car since is because i wanted to make it better and sort out things that go wrong with any older car, i reckon the actual have to spend maintenance on a well looked after TT is minimal, easily comparible to any performance sports car, we all have to remember sometimes that the Z is not a commywhore
remember alot of people bitch about having spent heaps on maintaining a TT where when you think about it Leave it stock... drive like a normal person... your car wont be expensive to maintain or Spend heaps of $$ Modding it to hell, turn the boost right up causing parts to be damaged in the process causing even more $$ to be spent on it...then yes, it will be expensive...
