Ran the codes on the ECU using the hightech "Paperclip method" by placing both ends in the IGN and CHK terminals of the Check Connector under the dash (see http://aus300zx.neuralmotion.com.au/tech/ecu_diagnotic/ECU%20Diagnostic%20Switch.htm). The Check Engine light intermitently flashed with 1 long and 3 shorts indicating error code 13 "engine coolant temp sensor circuit". So I bought a new temp sensor, installed it...........damn ! Still got the same problem. Ran the test again and its still "13". Guess I'll have to get the volmeter out and do so some more tests for the circuit. The temp sensor didn't cost that much so its not so much of a waste. However, I noticed the harness conncetor (female) to the Temp Sensor is missing the spring clip, rubber boot and a bit is chipped off. Although I cleaned the insides of the two holes, maybe this is the problem ? I tried to get a new part for this but the Nissan Parts guy told me I have to get the whole harness which costs HK$9,100 i.e. US1,166 !! Is there another way round this .......... cut the wires and make my own crimp plugs ? :(

I think you need to reset the ECU

I had a similar scenario to you - got a code 34 (DET sensor circuit) - I worked out where the fault was - wire between ECU and sensor plu, so i replace the wire, but still got code 34... Left the battery disconnected overnight to allow error codes to reset, and all was good.

    cheers

    Thanks ............I'll try that

Great tip ! Thanks. No I didn't do that but will pop downstairs and disconnect the battery, it'll be 3 1/2 hrs before I'm off duty and will drive home hopefully with a fixed Z and hopefully "ah koona ma tata ....no more worries". But what I did do was (I think) was to cancel the fault in memory by following Any Woo and Steve Chong's advice (see http://zhome.com on How I replaced the ECU and Ran Diagnostics) i.e. mode I->turn ignition ON but not starting the engine->paper clip in->wait 2 secs->take out paper clip->now in Mode II -> put in papr clip->wait 2 secs ->take out clip->back to Mode I and fault code in memory should be erased(?)

    Cheers mate,
    Steve

Lots of differing opinions on how...but all agree that disco'ing

battery overnight (AT LEAST) is required to clear codes.

of course someone with consult/datascan can do it is 2 seconds for you. Don't suppose that HK has a local zed contingent

One hour is enough to reset the error codes.
